Capital Caricatures : A Selection of Etchings by John Kay is essentially a visual portrait of late 18th-century Edinburgh. The book gathers a curated selection of John Kay’s etchings sharp, often humorous character studies of the city’s residents, and places them in context. Through these images, readers get a lively sense of the people who shaped Edinburgh at the time : doctors, lawyers, clergy, merchants, intellectuals, fashionable society figures and even the city’s more notorious characters. The accompanying commentary explains who these individuals were and why Kay chose to depict them, turning the collection into a vivid social history of the period rather than just an art book.
