An engraved plate, image area 12 x 18 cms approx., with 15 pages of text related to timber and wood. Tomlinson's Cyclopaedia of Useful Arts (1868 edition) is a monumental reference work edited by Charles Tomlinson, a Fellow of the Royal. It was conceived as a comprehensive survey of the mechanical and chemical arts, including manufacturing, mining, and engineering, and was originally inspired by the achievements showcased at the Great Exhibition of 1851. The illustrations are particularly valuable for understanding 19th-century workshop practices, as they often show artisans at work, offering a visual record of techniques that predate widespread photography. Tomlinson's editorial approach was hands-on: he claimed to have personally witnessed many of the processes described. The entries are technical and thorough, often eschewing simplification in favour of precision. Size: 17 x 27 cms. Category: Cyclopaedia of Useful Arts; Prints of Industrial Arts.
