A handsome British consular certification issued at Hamburg on 11 October 1839 by Henry Canning, Charge d’Affaires and Consul-General. Written in French, it attests to the authenticity of the seals and signatures of the Senate of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, adding Canning’s own signature and consular arms. A striking early example of nineteenth-century diplomatic legalisation. Small hole near the centre.
