London: W.H. Allen & Co., 1887. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good Condition. Item #373302
Como and Italian Lake-Land by T.W.M. Lund, published in 1887, is a travelogue exploring the scenic beauty and cultural richness of Lake Como and the surrounding Italian lake district. The book provides detailed descriptions of the landscapes, architecture, and local traditions, offering a glimpse into the region's charm during the late 19th century. Lund's work is notable for its engaging narrative and historical insights, and remains a fascinating account of one of Italy's most picturesque regions. Original green cloth, with decorated gilt upper board and spine. Untrimmed fore-edges. A little loss of cloth to head of the spine, and a couple of minor chips to the foot. Minor bumping and rubbing to the corners. The rear pocket, which appears never to have been occupied, is torn at the thumb point, where some imbecile has carelessly opened it, presumably seeking a content it likely never held. The text block is very firm and sound. 15 pages, 515 pages, folding map of the Italian Lake Land, 1 rather large map of Milan, 11 plates. The frontis and title page are rather foxed, the rest of the book is quite clean throughout, and the text block is firm with no loose pages or damage. Attractive armourial bookplate, of Frank Johnstone Mitchell on the front paste-down : Mitchell was involved in the nail-making industry in Newport, Monmouthshire, during the late 19th century. He was a partner in J. J. Cordes & Co., a firm specializing in nails, rivets, and spikes, which operated at the Dos Works in Newport. The company had been established around 1840 and underwent several changes, including a partnership dissolution in 1883, after which Mitchell continued as one of the remaining partners.
