The hand coloured scene shows French Hussars involved in the caputure of the Dutch Fleet. The seizure of the Dutch fleet at Den Helder on the night of January 23, 1795 marks a unique event involving both warships and cavalry, where a regiment of French Revolutionary Hussars nearly reached a Dutch fleet immobilized at anchor in the Nieuwediep, located just east of Den Helder. After some Hussars traversed the frozen Nieuwediep, the French cavalry successfully negotiated for all 14 Dutch warships to stay anchored. Capturing ships by cavalry is an exceptionally rare achievement in military endeavours. An original 1835 hand coloured engraving. Mounted in a dark green surround, total size 29.5 x 42 cms, the print is 12 x 16 cms approx. and is ready for framing.
