Haiti : Santo Domingo. The Capture of Gros Morne. Prise du Gros Morne. Drawn by Pierre Martinet. Engraved by Jean-Baptiste Reville. An Original Steel Engraving, published in 1836.
1836. Unframed Print. Very Good Condition. Item #373285
The hand coloured scene shows French troops engaged in hand to hand combat with the slaves at Gros Morne. The Haitian occupation of Santo Domingo, which later became the Dominican Republic, marked a period of Haitian governance over the eastern region of Hispaniola, commencing in 1805. Under the leadership of Jean-Jacques Dessalines, Haitian troops invaded Santo Domingo to counteract French-led slave raids, with the goal of asserting Haitian authority over the entire island. This occupation stemmed from the Haitian Revolution and the ambition to expand Haitian influence. The seizure of Gros Morne, a commune located in Haiti's Artibonite department, is not directly connected to the Haitian occupation of Santo Domingo. An original 1836 hand coloured engraving. Mounted in a dark green surround, total size 29.5 x 42 cms, the print is 12 x 16 cms approx. and is ready for framing.
