This edition of an atlas originally published in Britain in 1611 under the title The Theatre of Great Britaine represents a significant historical document. The cartographer John Speed began creating the individual maps in 1596, which were initially released separately before being compiled into The Theatre. This work was designed to serve as the topographical component of Speed's larger project, The History of Great Britaine. Upon its completion, it became the first published atlas of the British Isles, uniquely illustrating all the counties of Britain along with towns, villages, and boundaries as they existed at the conclusion of Elizabeth I's reign. It features the earliest known maps of numerous English towns and is richly adorned with heraldic motifs, depictions of battles, historical artifacts, and royal portraits. In the introduction, Nigel Nicolson offers a biography of Speed, discusses the art of Tudor map-making, and situates Speed's atlas within its historical context. Alasdair Hawkyard, the Archivist at Harrow School, provides detailed captions for the individual maps, highlighting topographical features and other elements, which allow readers to appreciate the significant transformations in Britain's landscape over the past four centuries. 288 pages with 67 full colour double page maps.
