Surtees reintroduces several characters from Young Tom Hall, which he had previously discarded due to conflicts with his publisher. The novel is replete with both hilariously awkward moments and unexpectedly poignant observations. Major Yammerton consistently delivers as a disheveled, financially struggling figure reminiscent of Somerville and Ross's ne'er-do-wells. Additionally, the ambitious Sir Moses Mainchance's interview with the unfortunate proprietor of Doblington's impoverished lands could easily have been overheard by Cobbett during his Rural Rides there isn't a fence ill turn a foal, the hars eat all wor tormots.
