In July 1848 Fussell was indicted for making a seditious speech at a Chartist meeting at Clerkenwell Green, May 29, 1848, and for unlawful assembly and riot. Evidence was given that he denounced the conviction of John Mitchell, and said if Mitchell were sent out of the country, every Irishman must rise to avenge the insult; that there was only one safe way of getting rid of bad rulers ? private assassination, etcetera. The meeting was followed by a procession through the streets, which was dispersed at a late hour by the police. Verdict, guilty of sedition and unlawful assembly. 26 pages, printed in double columns. An original article from the Reports of State Trials, New Series, 1894, published in facsimile, 1982. This particular trial report has been removed from a volume of Macdonell & Wallis's State Trials and is now preserved in a modern card cover for practicality - an unassuming but serviceable rebinding that favours function over finery.
