297 pages, fully illustrated. Pietro Testa, 1612 - 1650: Prints and Drawings is both a catalogue raisonne of the artist's prints and a survey of the range and development of his drawing style. Testa, much admired by his contemporaries for his exquisite draughtsmanship, has been called the most original and the only truly Italian etcher of his time. The book, which illustrates all of Testa's thirtyseven known prints, over seventy drawings, and five canvases, traces the development of his graphic style from early prints of religious subjects through richly inventive mythological landscapes, great poetic fictions, and, finally, the rigorously classical images of the last phase of his career. Elizabeth Cropper's introduction examines Testa's influence and critical reputation since the seventeenth century, and the three supporting essays place his art in specific contemporary theoretical, intellectual, and economic contexts.
