The arrival of the first herd of giraffes at the Zoological Society’s Gardens in 1836 was one of London’s great early zoological sensations. Four young animals from Kordofan in Sudan were brought to England by the trader Monsieur Thibaut and, after landing at Blackwall, were famously walked through the city to Regent’s Park, drawing crowds along the route. Temporarily housed in the old Elephant House, they became an immediate attraction, their novelty inspiring a flurry of engravings and newspaper reports. This 1836 woodcut belongs to that moment of public fascination, recording the exotic newcomers just as Londoners were encountering giraffes for the first time.
