A splendid looking 4 volume set, bound in blue coloured half leather over blue buckram boards. Gilt lettered spines, with raised bands. Top edge gilt, other edges untrimmed. Marbled endpapers. Signed by the binders Bumpus, Oxford, on the lower turn-in of each upper board. Very large bookplate, with Annie Cowdray's name and a view of Dunecht House to the front paste-down of each volume. Spines just slightly faded, and occasionally rubbed to the raised bands and to lower edges of the boards. Contents extremely clean throughout. v1; 16 pages, 416 pages, 12 colour plates, numerous black & white illustrations : v2; 19 pages, 458 pages, 13 colour plates, numerous black & white illustrations : v3; 17 pages, 420 pages, 12 colour plates, numerous black & white illustrations : v4; 19 pages, 444 pages, 11 colour plates, numerous black & white illustrations. All completed and as called for. Lady Cowdray was a feminist and supporter of Women's suffrage in the United Kingdom. She was a member of the Women's Liberal Federation, serving as president from 1921 until 1923. She also served as the Honorary Treasurer of the Liberal Women's Suffrage Union. She was an early and deeply supportive member of the Women's Engineering Society. Lady Cowdray was an avid art collector and patron of the arts. She was nicknamed the Fairy Godmother of Nursing due to her financial patronage of the Royal College of Nursing and her work to promote district nursing throughout England and Scotland. (Wikipedia).
