Original cloth binding, very faded and worn. 331 pages, with 30 (of 38) hand coloured plates, a hand coloured title page, and a portrait plate. Contents shaken and loose and detached from the binding. See pictures for list of plates present. A volume from Jardine's 'Naturalist's Library' series. Jardine made natural history popular with this series, running to forty volumes between 1833-1843. It was published by his brother in law, the Edinburgh printer and engraver, William Home Lizars. The series featured many well known artists, including Edward Lear. Each volume also featured an interesting essay article upon a well known naturalist with a portrait of the individual. Jardine edited the whole series, wrote a number of the volumes, and invited other well known naturalists to contribute some more specialist topics, such as Dogs and Butterflies.
