Original purple cloth binding, spine sun faded to brown. 268 pages, with 26 (of 32) hand coloured plates, a hand coloured title page, and a portrait plate. A tidy and sound volume. See pictures for list of plates present. A volume from Jardine's 'Naturalist's Library' series. Jardine made natural history popular with this series, running to forty volumes between 1833-1843. It was published by his brother in law, the Edinburgh printer and engraver, William Home Lizars. The series featured many well known artists, including Edward Lear. Each volume also featured an interesting essay article upon a well known naturalist with a portrait of the individual. Jardine edited the whole series, wrote a number of the volumes, and invited other well known naturalists to contribute some more specialist topics, such as Dogs and Butterflies.
