London: Publishers Joseph Clayton (V31, v32) & John Campbell (v35), 1858-62. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good Condition. Item #258685-H
The bindings of half leather, with marbled boards, are rubbed and worn, and soundly bound, though the spine is split at the front joint on v32. (See pictures for more detail). Each weekly issue typical consists of 28 pages (though it varies slightly), with news, current affairs, topics of the day, and literary reviews. Volume 31, 1360 pages; Volume 32, 1344 pages; Volume 35, 1456 pages. First published in 1828, and still being published every week to the present, this is a particularly uncommon journal, the print runs from this period being quite small. These three hardback volumes each contain a year's worth of issues. All are essentially clean and sound throughout, with minimal marks within the text. Under the editorship of Thornton Hunt (son of Leigh Hunt) the paper's editorial tone took on a pro-American feel, particularly supportive of President James Buchanan, with a position on slavery that attempted to reconcile the opposing views in the US Civil War, and promoting Buchanan's views in Britain counter to those of the mainstream British Press. Hunt himself was involved heavily in the campaign for the Repeal of the Taxes on Knowledge (all the issues on offer here have newspaper tax stamps to the first page each week), he campaigned with the Chartists, the People's International League, and had a rather unconventional personal life, involving a utopian style communal living arrangement. This is an uncommon collection of this weekly paper from an interesting political period. Size: Folio (8.5 x 12.75 in). Quantity Available: 1.
