1993 0751200859 / 9780751200850 First Edition Hardcover New 1.9 x 14.6 x 22.9 cm
James Africanus Beale Horton was a remarkable figure on the West African scene of the last century. This is a full-length biography of the talented and versatile man-physician, British Army officer, mining entrepreneur, banker - who was one of the most prolific West African authors of his time. Indeed, his most important legacy is West African Countries and Peoples written in 1868 to answer the newly-emerging champions of white racism, a book which predicted with uncanny accuracy the path Africa was to follw in the 1950s and 60s. Horton's life and career are portrayed against the political, economic and intellectual background of his own West Africa under the impact of colonial rule. 1992 0751200921 / 9780751200928 First Edition Hardcover Fine Condition 3.2 x 14.6 x 22.9 cm
This book provides a detailed analysis of British monetary policy in the aftermath of World War I and leading up to the onset of the Great Depression. The survey commences with the successful operation of the pre-1914 gold standard and goes on to examine the policies Britain adopted for monetary reconstruction up to 1924. The decision to return to gold in 1925 is considered in detail, and Professor Moggridge argues that the official policy did little, if anything, to correct the basic overvaluation of stirling. He examines the underlying reasons behind the limited use of more orthodox policy instruments and suggests the authorities were forced to develop new policies to combat the effects of gold at $4-86. The final section of the book sums up the ultimate impact of the new policy instruments which were adopted. 1994 0751202339 / 9780751202335 First Edition Hardcover Very Good Condition 3.2 x 15.2 x 22.9 cm
305 Pages. Both boards and foredges are slightly marked. Communities in Britain brings together the findings of some of the most influential field studies undertaken in Britain in the mid-1960s. The village, the market town, the urban housing estate, and sections of great cities are examined successively, revealing the power structures, the degree of communality or isolation, and the relationship patterns prevailing in different environments. From the results of these detailed studies the author develops in his final chapters a theory of social development in Britain which can hardly fail to intrigue the educated natives of a modern society. This revised edition includes as an appendix Professor Frankenberg's 1976 essay, Sex and Gender in British Community Studies. Both top corners of the board are a little bumped. Philosophers are, he sometimes think, constitutionally incapable of writing textbooks since, through training and inclination, they are unable to avoid their own opinions from obtruding at every corner in their argument. This book is no exception. He departs from many other writers in his treatment of interpretation and dramatic representation, for instance. More particularly there is an inescapable flavour of the exotic which derives from his interest in both hermeneutics and structuralism. Economic Analysis in Historical Perspective (Modern revivals in economics)
UK Gregg Revivals
1992 0751200883 / 9780751200881 First Edition Hardcover Fine Condition 23cm
256 Pages. This book concentrates on major ideas in economics, rather than taking the great men approach to the history of economic thought. It approaches the subject from the viewpoint of the modern literature, rather than working forwards from the historical material. The student should thus be able to more easily relate previous economic writings to the subject matter of an undergraduate course. Six specialist essays cover monetary economics statistics and econometrics, and some aspects of the balance of payments. This approach should make the student more readily aware of the wide range of issues involved in current debates, many of which are related to earlier economic controversies. By focusing on ideas rather than techniques, the book also help students to recognize the larger issues, and give them a broader perspective. Each essay is provided with an extensive bibliography which should be of particular use to postgraduate students, particularly those wishing to pursue in more detail some of the historical material discussed. Because the book covers issues normally omitted from histories of economic thought, especially public finance and econometrics, it aims to be successful in broadening the understanding of the student. 1993 0751202274 / 9780751202274 First Edition Hardcover Fine Condition 2.5 x 14 x 22.2 cm
230 Pages. These essays, many of them previously unpublished or extensively revised since original publication, focus on a topic of enduring concern to economists, the role of economists and economic theory in the formation of government policy. The volume begins with a discussion of the role of economists as contributors to economic policy, emphasizing the contrast between the freedom of the theorist in making his own assumptions and the constraints on the policy-maker in devising solutions to fit given circumstances. It goes on to analyze the problems involved in combining market influences on economic activity with the efforts to bring into play the administrative and political influences known as planning. Other essays reveal the complications introduced by rapid technical change and the relationship between this and economic growth and development. Cairncross examines the role of the main instruments of economic policy--the budget, credit control and the exchange rate--and ends with a discussion of employment policy. This study of Emile Durkheim, first published in 1939, offers a number of insights into Durkheim's work, many of which remain controversial. The author argues that one has to address the pressing issues of the day through a reinterpretation of the past rather than looking to the new or the novel. Focusing in particular on two Durkheimian concepts - collective consciousness and representations - Alpert challenges us to re-examine and review many Western prejudices concerning the Western relationship betweeen the individual and society. In this respect both Alpert's book and Durkheim's work remain relevant today The text itself is divided into three sections. Part 1 considers Durkheim, the individual. Part 2 looks at the nature, method and scope of Durkheim's sociology with particular reference to Alpert's defence of causality. Part 3 focuses on the definitions of sociology from Durkheim's standpoint.
