An American Vision: Henry Francis Du Pont's Winterthur Museum
UK Lund Humphries Publishers
2002 085331859X / 9780853318590 First Edition Hardcover Fine Condition Fine 2.5 x 23.5 x 28.6 cm
Institutional stamp on front endpaper. Book Description: The culmination of Henry Francis du Pont's lifelong vision and passion for collecting, Winterthur Museum houses the premier collection dedicated to American decorative arts. To celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of Winterthur, the National Gallery of Art, Washington, presents an incomparable selection of masterpieces chosen according to the very principles espoused by du Pont himself: rarity, beauty, historical association and provenance. The result, An American Vision, offers a stunning array of the vast riches of this remarkable museum. Born at Winterthur in 1880, H.F. du Pont played an integral part in the rising tide of interest in early American craftsmanship that took hold in the early twentieth century. Over the course of his lifetime, he succeeded in establishing a comprehensive collection that now comprises some 85,000 objects. Winterthur remains the greatest centre for the study of decorative arts made or used in America between 1640 and 1860. An American Vision explores the Winterthur collection, highlighting the fruits of du Pont's all-consuming appetite for the most beautiful and meaningful reminders of America's past. With chapters devoted to both specific time periods and themes, this volume illustrates the most prized pieces of a true connoisseur. : Review: Prize: Winner of the Choice Outstanding Academic Title Award 'Ably written by Cooper ... these essays use an impressive array of prize pieces from the Winterthur collection. Authoritative and well researched, the text is supported by a useful section of scholarly notes. This substantial and well-designed publication is lavishly illustrated with about 160 high-quality images, most in full color.' Choice 'This book is recommended because it is well illustrated and well written, with a text that explains the acquisition history of each piece shown. And as senior curator of furniture at the Winterthur, the author is well qualified to describe its collections.' Library Journal : About the Author: Wendy Cooper is the Lois F. and Henry S. Bottle of Notes : Claes Oldenburg and Coosje Van Bruggen
UK Lund Humphries Publishers
1997 0853317089 / 9780853317081 First Edition Softcover Very Good Condition 1.3 x 21 x 27.3 cm
72 Pages. Cover and edges are slightly marked. A small tear to top corner of the cover. Bottle of notes was commissioned by Middlesbrough Council and is the first public sculpture in the United Kingdom by the reowned artist partnership of Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen have produced works in Chicago, Des Moines, Las Vegas, Philadelphia, Dallas, Los Angeles, Barcelona and Dusseldorf, and this new addition to their prestigious list of large-scale projects puts Middlesbrough into a truly international context. Bottle of notes represents an inspiration to artistic vision, a spur to partnership and collaboration and a catalyst for change and development. It constitutes a new benchmark for public art in Britain and provided an important marker for the UK region of the visual arts festival in 1996, which was part of the arts 2000 scheme launched by the Arts council in 1991 to celebrate Britain's artistic achievements and to lay the foundations for cultural life in a new millennium. To all of the sponsors, fabricators and project officers who have been involved in the realisation of this masterwork, and most particularly to claes Oldenburg and Coosje Van Bruggen, I offer my warmest congratulations and gratitude. Book Description: Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen's monumental sculpture Bottle of Notes, which soars nearly thirty-five feet above the city of Middlesbrough, tilted at an angle almost as startling as the Tower of Pisa, is the first public sculpture in the United Kingdom by these two internationally renowned artists. This book, which contains over sixty colour illustrations of Oldenburg and van Bruggen's preparatory sketches and models, and photographs of the finished sculpture in situ, examines the sculpture, Bottle of Notes, from its conception to its final installation some seven years later. The text explores the inspiration behind the Bottle of Notes, and looks at the precedents to the Bottle in Oldenburg's work, in particular his large-scale sculptures. The final part of the book documents the making of the sculpture. Bottle of Notes was commissioned by Middlesbrough Borough Council, and the ingredient of the site which most captured Oldenburg's imagination was the history of Captain Cook, born in Middlesbrough. The city again provided the inspiration for the medium, the tempered-steel used in the sculpture echoing Middlesbrough's industrial heritage and continuing the legacy of the town's Ironmasters. This book offers a fascinating survey of the evolution of Oldenburg and van Bruggen's first large-scale sculpture in the United Kingdom, and also explores the role of public sculpture in modern urban life in an age where the siting and function of public art have become increasingly controversial. : About the Author: Richard Cork Size: 1.3 x 21 x 27.3 cm. 72 pages. 128 pages. fully illustrated. British sculpture underwent a remarkable transition in the last decades of the 20th century. The Weltkunst Collection comprises important works by 26 of the artists responsible for this transition. Many of them have gained an international reputation and sometimes notoriety in a way never achieved by their predecesors. This book, the first published of that collection, catalogues drawings and prints as well as sculpture, installation and media works. Analysis of the significance of the artists and their works is complemented by extracts from interviews with the artists themselves. The collection's location at the Irish Museum of Modern Art provides a perfect context from which to examine this unique "British" collection. The book is a guide to contemporary British sculpture, which constantly challenges the limits of visual art and questions accepted ideas of what sculpture can be. 232 Pages. Book and edges are marked and scuffed. For a century or more, from William Morris onwards, there has been an easily identifiable strain in society in Britain concerned with the improvement of the objects which they use and live with. This movement for reform has, through the years, developed certain ideas on the designer's social role as well as recognisable criteria on aesthetics. From the Arts and Crafts movement of the late nineteenth century, the design and Industries Association campaigns between the wars, through to the post-war Council of Industrial Design (now the Design Council), a tradition has evolved which is, he would claim, particularly British: a tradition in the approach to designing and a tradition in reaching the solutions, amounting to a long succession of products, both handmade and mass-produced, with a common visual character. The art of Pre-Columbian Mexico stretches across 5000 years and encompasses the traditions of numerous cultures including the Olmecs, Mayas and Aztecs. Book Description: The art of Pre-Columbian Mexico stretches across 5000 years and encompasses the traditions of numerous cultures including the Mayas, Incas and Aztecs. Ancient artefacts reflect an animistic society where it was believed that everything in nature was imbued with a soul or spirit. Addressing the Olmec period through to the Aztecs (a span of over 1000 years), this text is an exploration into the civilizations of Mesoamerica through an examination of over 250 art objects - highlights include the Senor de Las Limas, jade masks, a giant Olmec head and a bowl used for preparation of human skin after sacrifice. Specific themes such as daily life, the underworld of the gods, funerary rites, religion and ritual and the role of animals and plants in the cultural life of the region are discussed, so providing an insightful view into some of the most fascinating societies history has ever seen. Published to coincide with a major exhibition at Amsterdam's Nieuwe Kerk (and then the State Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg) this book draws on the expertise of numerous leading academics. The authoritative text is supported by reproductions of artefacts drawn from key ethnographical collections from around the world. Together these elements help create a story of a civilization in whom we can recognize the enduring quests and questions of humankind. : Review: ..". this well produced, large format book with excellent illustrations also contains six short, thought-provoking introductory essays..." "The British Royal Collection includes superlative works of art in numerous areas, but is perhaps most widely known for its old master drawings. The drawings housed in the Royal Library at Windsor Castle have been gathered by many monarchs over more than three centuries. This collection, especially famous for its Italian drawings have been generously lent to traveling exhibitions in recent years. The outstanding collection of Michelangelo's drawings shows many aspects of his art and is unusually rich in his rare but highly prized presentation drawings. Thus, the Royal Collection provides a remarkable opportunity to appreciate the variety and power of Michelangelo's draftsmanship. The depth of the Renaissance collection also provides a wide range of drawings by other early Italian masters that reveals their contemporary reaction to Michelangelo's extraordinary art. For the authors generosity in lending such a marvelous selection of works, we are most of all indebted to her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II." "Book Description: As the title suggests, the paperback edition of this popular title is a comprehensive overview of Michelangelo's style and how that style influenced the generations of artists that followed. The drawings are from his Windsor Castle groups and are divided into nine sections. Sections one through five cover heads, subjects sacred and profane, pen drawings and chalk nudes. The final four sections examine studies after his sculptures and the influence of the Sistine Chapel, The Last Judgment and the Pauline Chapel. Biographies of the artists and a bibliography complete this impressive catalog. : About the Author: Paul Joannides --This text refers to the Hardcover edition." Size: 29 x 24.1 x 1.9 cm. 256 pages. 2003 0853318883 / 9780853318880 First Edition Hardcover Very Good Condition Very Good 3.2 x 26 x 29.8 cm
341 Pages. Foredges are a little marked. Throughout his artistic career Picasso was fascinated by both caricature and the idea of the grotesque: light and dark representations of the distorted human figure. This book, published to accompany a major exhibition at the Museu Picasso, Barcelona, examines the distortion of the figure as a central creative force in Picasso's art and a springboard for his continual process of stylistic metamorphosis. The journey through Picasso's work takes us from the satirical illustration and portrait caricature of the 1890s to the radical distortion of the figure in Les Demoiselles D'Avignon and later Cubist portraits; from light-hearted vignettes of Diaghilev, Bakst and Apollinaire to the monstrous, Surrealist portraits of women of the 1920s-40s; from portraits of the artist as clown to the Verve series of meditations on the painter and his model. Finally we see Picasso as caricatured by his entourage: the tables are turned. Caricatures, monsters, puppets and grotesque figures populate the pages of this book, which is illustrated with over 400 reproductions of key works by Picasso drawn from public and private collections worldwide: paintings, drawings, sculptures, ceramics and prints. More than 100 of the works reproduced are previously unpublished. With a series of interpretative essays by an international cast of distinguished Picasso scholars, the book is aimed at all those with an interest in the life and work of a 20th-century master. Book Description: Throughout his artistic career Picasso was fascinated by both caricature and the idea of the grotesque: light and dark representations of the distorted human figure. Picasso: From Caricature to Metamorphosis of Style, which accompanies a major exhibition at the Museu Picasso, Barcelona, is the first book to examine the distortion of the figure as a central creative force in Picasso's art and as a springboard for his continual process of stylistic metamorphosis. This journey through Picasso's work takes us from the satirical illustration and portrait caricature of the 1890s to the radical distortion of the figure in Les Demoiselles D'Avignon and later Cubist portraits; from light-hearted vignettes of Diaghilev, Bakst and Apollinaire to the monstrous, Surrealist portraits of women of the 1920s-40s; from portraits of the artist as clown to the Verve series of meditations on the painter and his model. More than 100 of the works reproduced are previously unpublished. With a series of interpretative essays by an international cast of distinguished Picasso scholars, the book is essential reading for all those with an interest in the life and work of a twentieth-century master. : Review: '... a good survey of the less-emphasized periods in the artist's career...' Ellen Bates, Library Journal 'No other book has ever so convincingly demonstrated that Picasso was the greatest clown, prankster and buffoon of his generation.' Brian Sewell, Evening Standard 'A primary attraction here are the large-format illustrations, over 300 of them in colour... Many of the works here were previously only available in the Zervos catalogue monochrome reproductions; and over 100 of them have never previously been published. "Raymond Mason was born in Birmingham and trained at Birmingham School of Art before studying at the Royal College of Art and the slade in London. Since 1946, he has lived and worked in Paris where he quickly became part of the artistic milieu, meeting Picasso and forming life-long friendships with Balthus and Giacometti. In recent years, he has established an international reputation for his public sculpture-bronze and coloured epoxy resin, dramatic large-scale tableaux which make powerful and timeless statements about the human condition although often inspired by specific events. It contains essays by the artist, by Sarah Wilson (Courtauld Institute) and Jane Farrington (Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery), and a transcript of a radio interview between the artist and Richard Cork. The 108 illustrations include 25 in colour." Published to accompany an exhibition. Size: 27cm. 119 pages. Quantity Available: 1. Category: Art & Design; Lund Humphries. ISBN: 085331554X.
