Available Now. Book Description: The British Grand Prix is the oldest event on the World Championship calendar and the feud over its future, now secured, went on for more than ten years. This is the full story, told from the inside, of the business and personal battles between the British Racing Drivers Club, the organisers of the race, and Bernie Ecclestone, Formula 1's commercial rights holder. It is a story that has it all, combining high-octane personal jealousies (Sir Jackie Stewart and Bernie Ecclestone) and high finance told by a journalist with access to all the characters involved, and who himself served for two years as a BRDC director at the height of this drama. : About the Author: Alan Henry is one of the most respected F1 journalists, and has built up good relationships with most of the sport's leading personalities over the years. He is currently Grand Prix Editor for Autocar and regular Formula 1 columnist for The Guardian. His numerous books include a good number over the years for Haynes, including Jenson Button: A World Champion's Story and co-authorship of Stirling Moss: All My Races. He lives in Essex. 2006 1845840372 / 9781845840372 First Edition Hardcover New New 26 x 1.3 x 26 cm
Available Now. Book Description: Few cars of any kind have a more exotic and exciting reputation among enthusiasts than the first BRM, a 16-cylinder wonder machine that was a bright beacon of promise in Britain's drab post-war years. Heralded as a certain race winner and backed by the nation's motor industry, exploiting the seized secrets of the 1930s Germans, the British Racing Motor bid fair to put the UK at the top of the Grand Prix tree. It did come good--producing more than 500 horsepower--but only after the Formula 1 for which it was built had expired. From the files of the Ludvigsen Library come more than 80 rare photos of the BRM, one of the handsomest, indeed sexiest, racing cars of all time. Related articles and ephemera round out the story of a bold but ultimately misguided British venture that delivered too much too late. : Review: VSCC Bulletin, Summer 2008: This book was published about 18 months ago and initially evaded a Bulletin review. Karl Ludvigsen has written a most readable and detailed account of the story of the legendary and perhaps notorious V-16 BRM. It is evident that its chances of success were very slim. From its inception it was managed by committee with wholly inadequate resources. Most of the components came from outside sources who were more interested in the need for post-war survival than the BRM project. The great Alfred Neubauer inspected in its early stages at the primitive Bourne works and told Raymond Mays that such a complex car would never succeed with the inadequate resources available. Some of the responsibility for the over-complexity may rest with Laurence Pomeroy, a past President of the Club who postulated a 1500cc V-16 design in The Motor in 1938. Pomeroy's views and his authoritative technical explosion influenced Peter Berthon who designed the car, which like its predecessor, the E-type EPA had many inherent design faults. By the time it appeared, the World had moved on so the car only ran in one F1 Championship race before a formula change made it obsolete. The trials and tribulations of the design, development and the racing career are recounted by Ludvigsen who recognizes the remarkable dedication of the BRM mechanics and the enthusiasm of Raymond Mays. Without that enthusiasm the project would have died in the early stages, but Mays kept BRM alive, eventually leading to the F1 Constructors' Championship in 1962. This is not a long book, but is a detailed and authoritative account of an important venture in British motor racing history. Recommended. --The magazine for the Vintage Sports Car Club, UK : From the Publisher: FIf a racing car could disappoint an entire nation, that was : the dramatic fate of Britain's BRM. Conceived in 1946 as a world-beating : Formula 1 car, the BRM V16 was built by the nation's leading auto companies : and suppliers to put Britain at the forefront in Grand Prix racing. Yet it : failed so publicly and sensationally that the V16 BRM has gone down in : history as one of motor racing's most spectacular flops. : Award-winning author Karl Ludvigsen brings to life the travails and : triumphs of this exotic Formula 1 car, whose amazing engine was the first : in history to rev above 10,000 rpm -- with a shrill scream from its : exhausts that captivated all who saw, heard and drove her. : Few cars of any kind have a more exotic and exciting reputation among : enthusiasts than the first BRM, a 16-cylinder wonder machine that was a : bright beacon of promise in Britain's drab post-war years. Heralded as a : certain race winner and backed by the nation's motor industry, exploiting : the seized secrets of the 1930s Germans, the British Racing Motors bid fair : to put the UK at the top of the Grand Prix tree. : It did come good -- producing more than 500 horsepower from 1.5 litres -- : but only after the Formula 1 for which it was built had expired. Cockpit Monitoring and Alerting Systems
UK Avebury
1993 1857421094 / 9781857421095 First Edition Hardcover Very Good Condition 2.5 x 17.1 x 24.8 cm
"192 Pages. Small bump to both bottom foredges of the board. Front and back of the board lightly marked. Focuses on one of the central issues in the hightech ""glass cockpit"" - the problem of person-machine task optimization - that is alertness at times when needed, especially the small proportion of critical time when aircrew must monitor the systems that fly the craft." "Book Description: While monitoring of computer-controlled systems is widespread, it is critically important in the cockpit of current passenger aircraft. Such monitoring requires special vigilance for those rare untoward events, which may be new to the pilot and which can have devastating consequences. This book uses a multidisciplinary approach to address this problem of sustaining attention while monitoring. It outlines and explains alternative ways of viewing the processes needed to prevent Human Factors accidents; it examines the use and limitations of cockpit resource management programmes in inducing behavioural and attitudinal changes appropriate for highly automated flight decks. The author's approach deals rigorously with the physiological mechanisms underlying vigilance, arousal and stress, delineating clearly those that are relevant to the monitoring function. The three parts cover: monitoring problems and processes; monitoring measurement and alerting systems; and monitoring management. In the last part the author details management plans and guidance for monitoring assisted systems based on his understanding of the problems of continued human vigilance. Readership: pilots and training pilots; cockpit resource management groups; monitoring management specialists; university aviation departments; road and rail transport groups; those operating nuclear and large process installations. : Review: '...yet another of the excellent Ashgate series of titles on human aspects of aviation. The text is generously illustrated and copiously referenced. It deserves a wide readership from all involved in the practice or training of flight, as well as other transport interests...' Occupational Safety and Health '...a lively, readable book that skillfully brings empirical data and theoretical issues to bear on important practical problems. The major attraction of the book is that it illuminates the problem of cockpit monitoring in a succinct way, with only a little (necessary) jargon and in an engaging style that will appeal equally to the researchers in aviation psychology or human factors as it will to the practitioner in the aviation community.' International Journal of Aviation Psychology : About the Author: Dr Paul M Satchell Bsc(Med), MBBS, FRACP, PhD, MBA is Director of Merck, Sharp and Dohme, Australia Pty Ltd, Australia. Previously he was the director of the Gordon Craig Research Laboratory in the University of Sydney and had appointments at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. Dr Satchell's research area is the autonomic nervous system in health and disease. He is also a prize-winning MBA graduate and a keen pilot." Size: 2.5 x 17.1 x 24.8 cm. 192 pages. 216 Pages. NEW. The Reliant Regal is the iconic three-wheeler car with a cult following. This is the guide to finding a suitable Reliant Regal for restoration; a fully illustrated step-by-step guide on how to dismantle and restore the body, chassis, electrics and engine, taking the car back to showroom condition! The author has been a Reliant enthusiast since owning his first 3-wheeler in 1990. Review: If life with three wheels on your wagon gets your blood pumping ... this book is a must have. -- Classic Car Weekly. (December 15th 2005): It is a perfect step by step guide for dismantling and restoring the body, electrics and engine. -- British Car Magazine. (January 2006): Step by step through every job, in some cases bolt by bolt, mean this impressive publication is value for money. -- Classics Monthly. (March 2006) : From the Author: With 208 pages and 850 photographs the book is a thick one and I have tried to cram as much into it as I can. I know from working with workshop manuals myself that photos tell you a lot more than words do and so a lot of sequences are photographed in detail. Of course this book isn't a replacement for a workshop manual but supplements it nicely. Whilst a workshop manual assumes your Regal is shiny and new and that all bolts will come undone with minimal effort, this book looks at the real picture, seized bolts, rotten components etc etc and so looks into how to deal / replace / repair these. It also offers many facts from owners who have owned Regals for years, even small things like what tyres are best, crossply or radials and indeed can a Regal run on unleaded petrol? Alternative between the USA and Europe, with different routes each year, they have attracted the great and the good and anyone mad enough to risk their car in the hair-raising 3,000-mile race. In May 2004, journalist Clement Wilson and ex-champion jockey Richard Dunwoody joined forces to take a trusty Volvo estate car along the route in an attempt to outgun the Ferraris, Lamborghinis and Porsches of their fellow racers. Fuelled by Richard's competitive instincts to be the first across the finishing line and the last man standing at the bar, they dashed down the autoroute, through Spain and into the desert of Morocco, mixing pain and pleasure, as prangs and parties took them from one adventure to another. In this hilarious account they explain why rallying has become so enticing, what it's like to hobnob with the King of Morocco, dance with celebrities in Marrakech, get arrested in Spain and why burning rubber has never smelt so good! : About the Author: Clement Wilson is currently the Senior Features Writer & Motoring Correspondent for The European Magazine. "Book Description: Under a public choice analytical framework, this book applies formal economic measures to the passenger and taxpayer benefits of public transit service in the United States. Approximately 400 local transit budgets have been renewed annually for more than 25 years. These budgets epitomize Braybrooke and Linblom's concept of ""disjointed incrementation"" and Buchanan's concept of ""public choice"" since local legislators funded transit despite constant academic criticism of transit performance. On the other hand, Braybrooke and Lindblom and Buchanan show that local budgets capture benefits that traditional planning analysis does not grasp. This is borne out in analysis in the book. Indeed, far from draining society, transit returns five dollars in benefits for each one dollar of public subsidy. After explaining the analytical framework in chapter one, four chapters are devoted to measuring the value of transit benefits. The concluding chapter draws out the implications of this approach and of benefit measurement for policy and planning." Size: 1.9 x 15.9 x 22.2 cm. 304 pages. Multiple copies available this title. "Book Description: Focusing on European collaboration outside of the European Union (EU), this volume deepens the analysis of the current status of space policy in Europe, looking at the roles and functions of the institutions of European space collaboration, and what influences the interests and strategies of experts and policy-makers. Providing a new conceptual framework, the book also develops an innovative perspective for understanding the interactions between international and domestic policy-making, as well as a comprehensive analysis of how European states collaborate in a security-sensitive area such as space. This invaluable work is suitable for courses on and specialists in European studies, international relations and international political economy. : Review: 'This is a pioneering study of the European space sector. Its insights into the different logics that propel collaboration have much to contribute to the wider understanding of European integration.' Professor Helen Wallace, European University Institute, Italy 'Kazuto Suzuki has written a definitive account of the development of European Space Policy from the political science perspective. At each turning point he doesn't try to persuade us that the actual outcome was the only possible one. Based on interviews with all the key players, he shows there were always a number of options and using an innovative theoretical framework he explains how the preferred choices arose. A must for anyone interested in this policy area.' Then during the swinging 60's, branch lines all over the country, including the Worth Valley line, were closed as part of British Rail's streamlining policy. The replacement of steam locomotives with alternative forms of traction, completed in August 1968, also being part of the same exercise. However, while the Beatles were writing and recording songs that were to revolutionise the music industry, groups of individuals around the country were hatching plans and raising funds to save sections of our railway heritage which were to develop into major preservation centres providing both educational and leisure facilities for the enthusiast and tourist. Among the pioneers of this movement was the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway Preservation Society. The Worth Valley line was the first standard gauge railway to be bought from British rail and has been bought in its entirety. The railway is managed and operated by qualified volunteers and they have provided services every weekend for over three decades. The line has become famous as the location of much film and television work, including the original Railway Children, filmed in 1969/ 1970. Mike Heath has been visiting and photographing the railway for over twenty years recording all aspects of the line, day and night, accross all four seasons. Here in his first book, he takes us on a photographic journey along the route highlighting the diversity of the landscape through which it passes, the effect that the changing seasons and weather have on it, and the various events that the railway holds, capturing the Worth Valley experience enjoyed by thousands of visitors each year. "Book Description: For the last seven decades, urban settlement policy worldwide has been increasingly dominated by modernist precepts and by urban decisions made in discipline-specific 'silos'. The urban management consequences have been invariably negative, with increasing sprawl, fragmentation and separation resulting in a wide range of environmental, social and economic problems. This book explores the role of movement in a more integrated approach to urban settlement, and how thinking, policies and actions need to change. South Africa is used as a particularly good case study, since patterns of sprawl, fragmentation and separation have been exacerbated by apartheid, while recent legislation has demanded a reversal of these tendencies. : Review: 'This is an interesting case study from South Africa...the book emphasises an integrated approach to urban management incorporating mobility with interesting illustrations, data.' Starting from a theoretical basis, a number of control strategies are developed, which are subsequently tested on real-life networks. "Book Description: The book constitutes a valuable guide to the implementation of the CNS/ATM system towards ensuring safe, efficient and orderly evolution of international air transport. It uses a pragmatic approach in addressing the major legal, institutional, technical, political and economic aspects underlying the Global Navigation Satellite System, which is expected to play a fundamental role in aviation safety and air navigation world-wide. The book also examines, through well-reasoned analysis and research, the various controversial and relevant issues which will dominate the system in the years to come. The author demonstrates a profound grasp of the subject-matter through a sustained absorption of technical, institutional and legal principles applying to this complex subject. This is brought to bear in the coherent structure and logical organisation of the chapters which makes the book an invaluable tool for the aviation community, scholars and national and international regulatory authorities. It will also be immensely useful for practitioners who work towards further development and implementation of the CNS/ATM system. There has been no comparable work previously published. : Review: 'Alessandra Andrade's book makes a major contribution to the three most prominent areas of development in the new millennium - telecommunications, air transport and electronic data interchange. The strongest thrust of the book is its eminent practicality. The author has moulded scholarly concepts into clear thought and extended these thoughts to practical issues relating to the subject. Anyone who is interested in the legal and economic aspects of the Global Navigation Satellite System in its scientific setting will find in this book a useful repository of analytical information, pragmatic advice and guidance.' Dr Ruwantissa Abeyratne, International Civil Aviation Organization, Montreal 'This timely study is a rich source of background information, deep analysis and meaningful reflection on one of the most critical developments of ordern aviation which will accompany us for the decades to come. The insightful survey demonstrates the author's profound grasp of the subject matter and offers the kind of analysis needed for central decisions with critical improtance to the progress of civil aviation. ... It will be indispensable to practitioners, academics and governments involved in the process of implementing GNSS and can be strongly recommended.' What is the contribution of European transport research? These are some of the questions and themes addressed in this study of transport policy and research. It addresses the dynamics surrounding policy formulation and implementation, the conflicts of interest underlying these processes at the regional, national and supra-national levels, the inherent contradictions of the ecological modernization discourse as it applies to transport, and the role of the public or the citizen in determining trajectories for future developments. This is a critical factor in the emerging debates surrounding the absorption of the accession states into the EU, but it is essential for these states that their economic competitiveness is supported by appropriate and effective transport infrastructure. It is therefore crucial to find innovative approaches to the infrastructure itself, how it is financed and the ways in which proper evaluation procedures are implemented to select which policies, programmes and projects should be supported. This informative volume brings together leading international specialists in economic evaluation applied within the transport sector. Their contributions encompass all the main levels at which transport planning is typically conceptualized - strategic/regional policy, programme and project planning. It therefore examines how coherent economic evaluation practice can be developed and applied not only across different physical scales, but also across national borders."
