Gentle Caesar : Play in Three Acts, Minney R J & Sitwell Osbert
11 Minney R J & Sitwell Osbert
Gentle Caesar : Play in Three Acts
UK Macmillan
1942 First Edition Hardcover Very Good Condition Good 7.5 inches tall by 5 inches
129 pages in blue boards. One of the most moving episodes of our time, the closing phase of the reign of Russia's last Tsar, is here presented in the literary form best suited to its narration. The authors - R. T. Minney, who will be remembered for his celebrated Clive of India, and Osbert Sitwell whose talents have won him distinction in several fields - now give us a faithful record of the events and personalities which led to the undermining of a whole regime. But for the soviet's reverence for the historic background of Russia, and their care in preserving, and publishing, the detailed testimonies of eyewitnesses and protagonists, it would not have been possible to present today with such vividness these extraordinary pages of history. In their brief preface the authors indicate how little they have been obliged to adjust the actual facts of this closing tragedy. The Tsarina who had been largely brought up in England since the age of seven by her grand-mother, Queen Victoria, inherited a love of family life of a simple kind away from the pageantry of Courts. The Tsar, devoted to her as she was to him, shared these predilections. In a cottage, somewhere in England their happiness would have been idyllic. But fate placed upon them the cares and responsibilities of autocratic rule extending over a great and diversified people. The principals struggled and gasped ineffectually, until the waters closed pitilessly above their heads. R. T. Minney and Osbert Sitwell have made of this drama a most memorable play, rich in characterisation and tragedy, and shot with comedy and wit. Book - Very Good Plus Plus - slight darkening to top page edges & extreme top of boards Dust Jacket - Very Good - slight browning to spine though lettering is still clear & distinct, very slight wear to corners & edges Size: 7.5 inches tall by 5 inches. Plays in One Act : Thomas; Penny Dreadful; Drought
"Sydney, Australia" Edwards & Shaw
1958 First Edition Hardcover Very Good Condition Good Signed by Author
Thomas; Penny Dreadful; Drought. 69 pages, size 8.5 inches tall by 5.5 inches. ' These three one-act plays by an Australian author are, though good reading, essentially acting plays. Drought (here republished) was a prize-winner years ago in an English competition organised by the International One-Act Play Theatre. It has been acted in many different parts of the world (England, Wales, South Africa, New Zealand, as well as Australia) and it is still asked for, and produced. It deals with an episode of early Australian days, before any of the amenities of modern times could ease the situation. Penny Dreadful and Thomas, now published for the first time (one a tragedy, the other a comedy) share with their successful predecessor the qualities of good writing, characterisation and sense of theatre. All three will help fill a need, particularly among small theatrical groups. Because of their contrasting periods and subjects, they could be used not only separately but for a complete bill of one-act plays '. Book - in Very Good pink boards with black lettering - some bumping to the extreme corners and extreme ends of the spine. Contents, faint browning to the front and rear free endpaper and a minor patch of abrasion where a price has been removed from the corner of the front one, otherwise clean, bright and tightly bound. Dust Jacket - Near Very Good - small amounts of wear to the extreme corners and extreme ends of the spine, strengthening to verso, light grubbiness to the white background to the jacket. Unfamiliar Shakespeare : Scenes From The Less Known Plays
UK Duckworth And Co
1962 First Edition Hardcover Very Good Condition Good 7.5 inches tall by 5 inches Signed by Author
Scenes From The Less Known Plays [SIGNED BY AUTHOR] 1962. ?For this anthology Mr. Halliday, who has written several books on Shakespeare, has taken thirty- five scenes from the less-known plays?all of them, he considers, better than the minor work in the more popular ones, and some almost as good as anything Shakespeare wrote. He has edited and presented them with his own notes, in the hope that many who know only the great plays will find in them a long sequence of new delights; while dramatic societies might well consider them as variants from their productions of the usual hackneyed Scenes from Shakespeare. As he says, the minor work of Shakespeare is the major work of most other men; and it is time that proper honour was paid to these unfamiliar passages from our greatest dramatist and poet.? Scenes from the less-known plays chosen, with an introduction by F E Halliday. Book - in Near Very Good green boards with silver lettering - some bumping to the extreme corners and light bumping to the extreme ends of the spine. Contents, light speckling to the extreme page edges otherwise clean, bright and tightly bound. Dust Jacket - Very Good - light browning to the jacket and light creasing to the corners. Signed & Dedicated by F E Halliday. . Size: 7.5 inches tall by 5 inches. 224 pages. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 500 grams. Category: Theatre & Plays; Signed by Author.
