An End to Promises : Sketch of a Government 1970-74, Hurd Douglas
1 Hurd Douglas
An End to Promises : Sketch of a Government 1970-74
UK Collins
1979 0002160315 / 9780002160315 First Edition Hardcover Very Good Condition Good Signed by Author
Sketch of a Government 1970-74 [SIGNED & DEDICATED by AUTHOR]. 161 pages, size 8.5 inches tall by 5.25 inches. ' Edward Heath's was one of the most controversial of British administrations and he himself a prime minister who inspired extremes of approval or disapproval. To some he was a doctrinaire fanatic, hell-bent on confrontation with the Unions. To others he was the only statesman on either side of the House of Commons, a giant among pygmies. Douglas Hurd does not pretend to impartiality: 'I believe,' he writes, 'that Mr Heath was a most remarkable patriot and Prime Minister.' Nor does he seek to present a definitive history of this critical period in British political life. Instead, he has written the highly personal record of a prime minister's political secretary: a man at the heart of public affairs whose duties were imprecise, influence ill-defined, and whose capacity to see and judge what was going on was all the greater for this uncertainty. How did the administration work ? How were the decisions taken ? Who took what line on the Common Market ? Why did the fatal clash with the miners become inevitable ? Or, on a more trivial plane, who wrote the Prime Minister's speeches; what really happened in the Newport Pagnell cafeteria; which senior minister was distressed to discover that, under Mr Wilson, beer and pork pies had become staple fare at planning meetings in Number Ten ? Witty, intelligent and, above all, well-informed, Douglas Hurd offers a masterly portrait of an administration which, to some extent, has affected all our lives, and a challenging assessment of how the system can be improved .' Book - in Very Good blue boards with gilt lettering - some fading to the board edges and light bumping and rubbing to the extreme corners and extreme ends of the spine. Contents, a few spots of browning to the first and last couple of pages and speckling to the page edges, a small bump to the page edges, otherwise clean, bright and tightly bound. Dust Jacket - Good Plus Plus - some chipping to the edges and corners, some small closed tears to the ends of the spine repaired/strengthened to the rear, light browning to the front flap, light sunning to the spine, price clipped. Animal Behaviour
UK Edward Arnold
1900 First Edition Hardcover Very Good Condition No Dust Jacket
Conwy Lloyd Morgan (1852 - 1936. Although he wrote a textbook on animal biology and published a number of papers on local geology (as well as one on the volcanic rocks of the St. Davids' area), he decided that he could make a more significant contribution to knowledge in the study of psychology. He began to direct his research effort to the field of what he called mental evolution, the borderline between intelligence and instinct, where he developed his reputation in experimental psychology and animal behaviour. He established a tradition of careful observation of behaviour in natural settings and gave contemporary animal science much of its technical vocabulary, e.g., 'trial-and-error learning', 'reinforcement', and 'inhibition.' viii, 344 pages, size 8 inches tall by 5.5 inches, with an index and a 16 page catalogue to the rear. Capital, Confidence and the community, Bellman Sir Harold

Capital, Confidence and the community
UK W Heffer & Sons
1938 First Edition Hardcover Good Condition Good
x, 198 pages, size 7.5 inches tall by 5 inches with an index. ' In this book. Sir Harold Bellman, widely acknowledged as an authority, reviews some outstanding problems of the day in business and politics. Here is no dry-as-dust professor, but an active participant in world affairs, with a sense of realities, and a gift of self-expression (seasoned by humour) on topics which intimately concern the man in the street. The subject-matter is distinguished by its widespread appeal and ranges from Britain's recent prosperity and the factors which shaped it to alcohol in relation to social welfare; from the new tools in Britain's recent economic technique to the problems of democracy; from the social responsibilities of accountants to the traditions and efficiency of the Civil Service. Housing, both as a medium of social well-being and as an economic stimulus, is given a special place. Moreover, reference is made to such topical matters as the present business recession, the significance of rearmament, and so forth '. Book - in Near Very Good blue boards with gilt lettering - marking to the boards in certain lights and light bumping to the extreme ends of the spine. Contents, Harold Bellman's Compliment Slip to the free front endpaper, minor loss and crease to the edge of the rear free endpaper, otherwise clean, tight and tightly bound. Children Apart : Problems Of Early Separation From Parents, Rowlands, Peter

Children Apart : Problems Of Early Separation From Parents
UK Dent
1973 0460078852 / 9780460078856 First Edition Hardcover (Original Cloth) Fine Condition Good 8 inches tall by 5 inches
Problems Of Early Separation From Parents [FIRST EDITION COMPLETE WITH DUST JACKET] 1973. ?One of the greatest emotional disturbances to face a young child is premature separation from its parents. This book is for parents faced with the problem. Boarding schools, hospitals and adoption are some of the causes of separation dealt with in an effort to help parents understand the difficulties faced by their children in strange surroundings. Peter Rowlands stresses the need for different situations being treated individually in terms of what is liable to affect the child, and what choices are open to the parent, but he shows that there is an underlying theme connecting them. This is the principle that premature separation of a young child from its mother can have serious lasting effects. A number of common situations are analysed and some practical guidelines based on a study of case histories are offered, with the intention not of criticizing, but of helping. This subject was never more important than today when the concept of the family as an enduring unit is being increasingly questioned.? Book - in Fine [much better than Very Good] bright red boards with gilt lettering - just a touch bumped to the extreme bottom of the spine. Contents, clean, bright and tightly bound. Dust Jacket - Near Very Good - some grubbiness to the front cover and light wear to the extreme top edge and extreme extreme top corners. Size: 8 inches tall by 5 inches. "xi, 150 with an index". Children Of Light And The Children Of Darkness : a Vindication Of Democracy And A Critique Of Its Traditional Defenders, Niebuhr Reinhold
5 Niebuhr Reinhold
Children Of Light And The Children Of Darkness : a Vindication Of Democracy And A Critique Of Its Traditional Defenders
UK Nisbet & Co
1945 Reprint Hardcover Good Condition Good
vii, 128 pages, size 7.75 inches tall by 5.25 inches. 'Dr Niebuhr's works have created for him an eager and expectant audience among readers in a somewhat specialised field, but this new book, which has already provoked much discussion and controversy in the United States, appeals to a much wider public. The Author is convinced that democracy is in peril if it is merely taken for granted, and that it must be protected and sustained by a more fundamental justification-and one more universally understood-than it receives from the politicians and publicists, whose confidence, he holds, has been based upon an unduly optimistic estimate of human nature and human history. Contemporary experience has shown that this optimism is intrinsically a danger to democratic societies, and the apprehension that it may refute the democratic ideal itself is one which cannot be disregarded. The safeguards of the future are to be found in the ability of men to reach tentative and tolerable adjustments between their competing interests and to arrive at some common notions of justice which transcend all partial pretensions. Only such an adjustment will avoid in the national sphere an excessive assurance on the one side or complete moral cynicism on the other; either will fall a victim to political tyranny. The Author, however, goes further and deeper, since the real foundations of social justice cannot be circumscribed by any frontier. He urges that they should be investigated and accurately assessed, and, when sufficiently determined, recognised in increasing measure as the basis of the only secure relationship between members of the world community of nations.' Book - in Near Very Good bright blue boards with silver lettering - some bumping and a touch rubbed to the extreme corners and extreme ends of the spine. Contents, light spotting to the pastedowns and rear free endpaper, light creasing to the top corner to some pages, speckling to the extreme page edges, previous owner's inscription otherwise clean, bright and tightly bound. Dust Jacket Near Very Good - some wear to the extreme corners and extreme ends of the spine, some darkening to the spine but lettering still bright and distinct. Quantity Available: 1. Feminine Fig-Leaves
UK Faber & Faber
1938 First Edition Hardcover Very Good Condition Good 7.5 inches tall by 4.75 inches
?Author of English Women's Clothing in the Nineteenth Century. In this shrewd and witty and illuminating study of modern woman, Dr. Cunnington shows himself a master of finesse. Fig Leaves is his apt phrase for all the various devices by which women conceal portions of their minds and bodies from masculine view, and thereby excite and maintain masculine curiosity. It is, he says, an instinctive habit of their sex. But, as fashions change, the fig-leaves change too; and the modern woman, who prides herself on having discarded all the obsolete fig leaves, has invented new and no less effective substitutes. Marriage, motherhood, religion, morality, and the emotions?all these, in Dr. Cunnington's provocative view, are fields for the use of fig-leaves. Deftly, even tenderly, but remorselessly, he strips their wearers bare. If the process is often extremely entertaining, the purpose and the result are serious enough. For truth?though we do not remember that Dr. Cunnington explicitly says so?is proverbially naked.? Book - in Near fine [better than Very Good] black boards with gilt lettering - light bumping to the extreme corners and extreme ends of the spine. Contents, previous owner's inscription otherwise clean, bright and tightly bound. He's Much Better, He Can Smile Now : Children Learn To Live
UK David & Charles
1974 First Edition Hardcover (Original Cloth) Fine Condition Good 8.75 inches tall by 5.5 inches
Tom Wakefield. ?This is the story of a group of people, mostly children over ten, and a much smaller number of men and women, all working and learning together. The children are of many nationalities and all are initially ?disadvantaged' and deprived, coming in nearly every case from poor homes. This mixed community happens to be a school, and its story is the happiest, most encouraging one to be told for a long time. It tells how care, concern, and sympathetic co-operation between adults and children can turn sadness into happiness because, in the end, the great majority of these young people learn to find themselves by communicating with each other ? to live. And the staff, certainly the author, would add that they too are learning to live; in practice by studying their children, each one of whom has some desire or interest or ability that can be discovered and fulfilled. Downsview is what life is all about. There is Rufus who arrived when he was six, stern, withdrawn, uncommunicative, but after two and a half years of encouragement, the moment of triumph comes when he performs his first act of sharing by offering a toy he has made to Tom Wakefield. Herbert, a fourteen-year-old, was aggressive, noisy and well-nigh illiterate. Within weeks he found some sense of security and friendliness. He was soon reading. These are two typical examples of what goes on at Downsview. Mr Wakefield relates his experiences with an immediacy, vigour and humour which come of deep involvement. He takes us through the first tentative and apprehensive beginnings of the school, the solving, for instance, of such basic problems as what form morning assembly should take with so many religions represented, to highly personal accounts of the life of the staff and himself. Each illuminates the results of patient and imaginative attention to individuals, and has lessons for children and adults alike ? parents as well as teachers. The lively narrative has a lot of practical things to say about the bringing up of children at home and at school. In its way it is also quietly revolutionary, implying that a radical review of the educational system should be going on all the time. This is a true story, but its well-drawn characters, the way it sets a scene with a few quick strokes, would be worthy of a talented novelist. The title is based on a mother's statement to Tom Wakefield. An alternative could have been the words of a boy who was enjoying school so much that, at the end of the autumn term, he summed up his attitude by calling, not for three cheers, but 'three boos for the holidays'. Educationalists, social workers and parents will find here a testimony of hope.? 1921 First Edition Hardcover Good Condition No Dust Jacket
From The New Era Series Volume Ten. 160 pages, size 7.5 inches tall by 5 inches. Preface ; ' The following has been written in part before I went to Russia, and the remainder since my return. It represents my considered views on policy and purpose, whatever defects it may contain of a literary character. Few of us appreciate the fact that we are passing through a definitely revolutionary period. It is a well-known historical truism that in all revolutionary periods the bulk of those who lived through these times considered the events happening round and about them were mere transient affairs. What is called human progress consists of the partial or complete success of an active and intelligent minority forcing their views and convictions on an undiscerning and indiscriminating majority. 'Twas ever so. It will remain so. I hope the book will arouse criticism. It will assuredly receive condemnation. So much the better. Anyone who goes through life without his share of criticism, and even abuse, contributes nothing of real value to that which we call human progress. I regret that space considerations prevented me from going more fully into that which here and there has merely been hinted at or dealt with very briefly. However, there it is, and I leave it thus. New Mind and Other Essays
Shanghai China Kelly & Walsh
1930 First Edition Hardcover Good Condition No Dust Jacket
244 pages, size 8.75 inches tall by 6 inches. ' Most of these essays have already been published in different magazines. Some consist of unpublished subjects. These scattered essays contain some matter of permanent value, and they are collected together and published in one volume. The essays on the Perfect Life and the Taoist Superman bear a certain resemblance. One was written in Shanghai and delivered before the Royal Asiatic Society: the other was written in London and read before the China Association. They both deal with the same subject. It is a large one, and in a sense, it may be claimed that one is a complement of the other. The essays are mixed, but there is one thread running through all, and that is China. The subjects differ and vary, but they are all concerned with Chinese things. Some deal with the Chinese view of life: some with Chinese politics: some with culture and education: some with progress and reform. The aim has been, in all cases, to bring Chinese history to bear on every theme. This is the only valuable factor that I would claim for these essays. An attempt has been made to judge Chinese things from Chinese experience and history. What was merely local and temporal may have already passed away, and one's opinion at the moment of writing may now be of little use. Take for example the remarks on the militarists. Marshal Chang is dead: Marshal Wu is in retirement, and Marshal Sun has lost many battles since then, and is, for the time being, off the stage. The references to these and other things may have been ephemeral; yet, I venture to hope that the subjects round which they were set have permanent value. The object of this volume is an attempt to understand the character of the Chinese, as we see it revealed in their religion, in periods of transition, in the council chamber, in their political life, in business and in the camp, in their ancient ideals and in their modern practices. Thus, by an examination of the several departments of life, we may get nearer to them and, by an interpretation of the spirit of their inner life, have some understanding of the people. The Chinese nation is full of physical energy and mental power. It has a long and honourable domestic history: the future may show that it will have an equally honourable part to play in international life. The writer has approached the subject with sympathy and respect: if some of his views on some phases of the questions treated, may seem critical and adverse, he can only hope that the reader will be assured that any adverse comment has been made in good faith, and that any conclusion reached has been from the desire to be just. 1981 0861164571 / 9780861164578 First Edition Hardcover Very Good Condition Good 8.25 inches tall by 5.5 inches
We are not particularly surprised when a small boy whose home conditions are so favourable that he has every confidence in himself and his future, announces that he is going to be a doctor or an engineer when he grows up, writes Jim Berry in PERMISSION TO LIVE. What does surprise us, is that someone whose home conditions are appalling, should make a decision to become a drunkard, or a criminal, or to get himself 'put away'. He takes us on a fascinating journey, step by step, through the emotional processes which causes these decisions to be made, and in the light of what we learn we are able to take a fresh look at problem families, vandalism, hooliganism and juvenile delinquency. The author examines the relationship between social workers, probation officers, magistrates, police and young offenders; suggests a new role for social workers and shows us how we, the general public, have a vital part to play in eliminating the social evils which beset our times.? The Meaning of the Local : Politics of Place in Urban India
UK UCL Press
2006 1844721140 / 9781844721146 First Edition Hardcover New No Dust Jacket 24 cm
256 Pages. By zooming in on urban localities in India and by unpacking the 'meaning of the local' for those who live in them, the ten papers in this volume redress a recurrent asymmetry in contemporary debates about globalisation. In much literature, the global is associated with transnationalism, dynamism and activity, and the local with static identities and history. Focusing on a range of locales in India's metropolitan areas and provincial small towns, the contributions move beyond the assertion that space is socially constructed to explore the ways in which social and political relations are themselves spatially and historically contingent. Using detailed ethnography, the authors highlight the vitality of place-making in the lives of urban dwellers and the centrality of a 'politics of place' in the production of power, difference and inequality. The volume illustrates how urban spaces are increasingly interconnected through wider social and spatial processes, while local boundaries and group-based identities are at the same time reconstructed, and often even consolidated, through the use of 'traditional' idioms and localised practices. All contributions relate detailed case studies of everyday activities to a range of contemporary debates that highlight various spatial aspects of cultural identities, economic restructuring and political processes in India. The volume provides an interdisciplinary perspective on urban life in rapidly changing political and economic environments. It offers a contribution to policy-orientated debates on urban livelihoods and urban planning as well as a wealth of ethnographic material for those interested in the spatial dimensions of urban life in India. Utility Baby, Collins, Dale

Utility Baby
UK Herbert Jenkins
Hardcover Good Condition Good 7.75 inches tall by 5.25 inches Joyce Dennys Signed by Author
?When Assistant Press Censor Brown and Midge found they'd got their wish and were going to have a baby they were delighted?and dismayed. For it was the fifth winter of the greatest war in history, and that seemed a perilous and difficult time for such an enterprise. Midge decided that theirs was to be a Utility Baby, and A.P.C. Brown, an Australian, was persuaded to put his trust in Granny England. How he found she was not too busy with bombs and battleships to care for a baby?how Susan arrived at a total cost of 9 ? the troubles and joys which came to them?make up a record which will warm the hearts of parents, young and old, and might even touch and amuse a grouchy old bachelor. That is the way it seemed to Dale Collins, whose usual line of literary country is exotic lands and seas, far removed from pink little new-born babies and doting parents. And, in passing, Utility Baby presents a new and very human slant on Britain at war and how her ordinary people are living.? World Production Order
UK Allen & Unwin
1935 First Edition Hardcover Very Good Condition Good
Wibaut Dr F M [Translated from the Dutch By R W Roame]. 240 pages, size 7.5 inches tall by 5 inches. ' This book demonstrates that our present system of production and distribution has grown obsolete and outworn. The system inevitably leads to a chronic condition of chaos, resulting in mass unemployment. It also leads to private monopolies which control, in their own interest only, prices of the necessities of life. As the author points out so vigorously, the interest of humanity urgently requires the establishment of a system of production directed to raising low standards of living all over the world, which will constitute and maintain equilibrium between world production capacity and world consumption. That collective world production need no longer be regarded as Utopian is shown by a series of statistital facts. The author also makes it clear that The League of Nations and the International Labour Institute contain the germ of International and national councils and institutes required for building up ordered production on the basis of democracy. Collective productions and distribution will form the basis for a class-free community, and in this lies the foundation for a higher level of spiritual life '. Book - in Very Good blue boards with black lettering - light marking to the boards and slight bumping to the edges. Contents, light marking to the pastedowns and endpapers, otherwise clean, bright and tightly bound.
