Accident And Other Poems, Turner, James
2 Turner, James
Accident And Other Poems
UK Cassell
1966 First Edition Hardcover Very Good Condition Good 8.75 inches tall by 5.75 inches
First Published In This Edition. ?By what the poet calls 'the second's error', most people at some time in their lives cross, helpless and uncomprehending, the frontiers of pain. A perspective of humiliating surrenders, physical, moral and intellectual, then lies before them. The new universe is administered, but not shared, by doctors, nurses and priests for pain is incommunicable, a private experience which is only privately exceeded by the experience of death itself. Its mystery and its isolating power are the themes of Accident, the poem sequence of James Turner's work. The final poem in this group, Physio-Therapy, is carol-like in its relief, thankfulness and gaiety. The young men whose strong bodies shattered so terribly are healed and 'off to the open country of the fixed bicycle'. This sequence describes the abnormal check which the hospital gives to the rational pace of life, with a taut originality which, like the accident itself, cuts across the centre of the expected. Mr Turner has been described as 'perhaps one of the six best nature poets now writing'. The other poems in this collection observe the rock beneath the idyll, the absolutism of wild creatures, the brilliant fox and the pike's muddy royalty. The poet sees the new agricultural methods scratching at the surface of the universe while the implacable rhythms of tide and season defy re-order. He watches the proud surface life of man, and beasts and flowers provide the humus for the harsh and lasting depths. Accident and Other Poems is James Turner's fifth book of poems. He is a mid-20th century metaphysical whose God is increased by the miracles of the age and whose man is, for all his science, mortal after all.? Book in Fine [much better than Very Good] bright grey paper covered boards and gilt lettering. Contents, faint browning to the front and rear free end paper, some browning to the half title page otherwise clean and tightly bound. Dust Jacket Very Good - light marking to the jacket, minor closed tear to the top edge of the front of the jacket repaired to verso, a touch of wear to the top edge corners. Dedicated by the Author. Ballad and the Wood of S.Hubert, Riley Hubert
5 Riley Hubert
Ballad and the Wood of S.Hubert
UK Macmillan & Burns & Oates
1961 First Edition Hardcover Fine Condition No Dust Jacket 7.25 inches by 5 inches
Riley Hubert. 40 pages. Religious Poetry. ' Legends and folk-tales should not be dismissed as being unprofitable on the grounds of their not being true. In this sense parables are not true, and even symbols are tainted, yet we are chiefly dependent upon parables in some form or other for teaching and learning, and life would be unintelligible without symbols. Of many of the most revered saints in Christendom it cannot be said that they are ensamples of godly life since we know little or nothing of their lives, yet the legend, that hangs from a saint's name as from a peg, may illuminate and inspire. This, then, is my apology for interpreting allegorically the legend of S. Hubert in The Ballad, in which the hunter's thoughts are the trees. The pieces which make up The Wood begin with a naive agnosticism, and range through rebellion, doubt, despair, to assurance of the Love of God. The experience in thought which they illustrate is, I am sure, common to the experience of many men, young and older. They are not intended to be more than an approximate commentary to the narrative, for it seemed to suit my purpose better to have them faithful in recollection rather than forced to a parallel by artifice '. Book - Fine [much better than Very Good] - in green boards with gilt lettering - just a touched bumped to the extreme corners and extreme ends of the spine. Dust Jacket - None. Dedicated and Signed by the poet's friend, poet and author, MILLICENT WEDMORE to the free front endpaper. Size: 7.25 inches by 5 inches. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 250 grams. Century of Translations from the Greek Anthology, Gunnyon William
16 Gunnyon William
Century of Translations from the Greek Anthology
UK Kilmarnock : Dunlop & Drennan, Printers
1883 First Edition Hardcover Good Condition No Dust Jacket
98 pages, size 6.75 inches tall by 4.25 inches. ' The following Translations, executed at intervals during the last twenty years, appeared from time to time in Kilmarnock or Glasgow journals. They were undertaken solely as a literary solace, and with no view to subsequent collection and republication. But during late years I have been asked so often, and by so many, to republish them that I at last reluctantly consented. However, I had got jaded, and I shrank from the labour of revision. But I did them at first as carefully as I could, and I am not sure that by revision I should have improved them. Still, if I did not think they had some merit, especially that of fidelity, no solicitation, however urgent, would have induced me to republish. The name of the translators of the Greek Anthology, to a larger or smaller extent, is Legion, and among these have been some of our countrymen the most eminent for scholarship and poetic genius. This effort of mine, therefore, may appear presumptuous; but I am neither weak enough nor vain enough to enter the lists as a rival to these, nor do I offer my little book as a critical guide. It pleased me in the production, and it seems to have pleased a sufficient number of, it may be, partial friends to justify me in clothing it in this form. So far from its being intended as a critical guide there is neither chronological classification, nor even that by subjects. The versions are set down pretty much in the order in which they were made, and if there is not method there is at least variety. In several instances there are two versions of the same epigram, which may be considered superfluous. But for twenty-five years I was a classical teacher, and the double versions are given with something of the complacency of a schoolmaster, to '' teach the young idea that more than one version, and each equally faithful, may be made of the same subject by the same person. Besides, some of these are in blank verse, and such rendering of a short poem, if the only one, however faithful and flowing it may be, is scarcely satisfactory. It indicates a poverty of verbal resource particularly inappropriate in a translator. Hence the second versions in some species of rhymed measure. I have, I confess, undertaken a hazardous and ambitious task, and one apt to challenge damaging comparisons. But I have no wish to deprecate criticism, whatever its verdict, provided it be given with knowledge and fairness. GLASGOW, DECEMBER, 1882 .' Dr Faust's Sea-Spiral Spirit and Other Poems
UK Routledge & Kegan Paul
1972 0710072716 / 9780710072719 First Published in This Edition Softcover Very Good Condition Signed by Author
80 pages, size 8.5 inches tall by 5.25 inches in card covers. ' These poems of Peter Redgrove are points of land running into the sea. The sea is the sea of being alive. There are poems that are thorny webs of sensation. There are poems that discover life from the backbone. Now in his fortieth year Redgrove has used his new book of poems to relate his changes. He is asking questions about the brain and the heart, the embryo and the sorcerer, about the Bible and about the clock. Edgar Poe and His Critics, Whitman Sarah Helen
25 Whitman Sarah Helen
Edgar Poe and His Critics
US Tibbitts and Preston
1885 Second Edition Hardcover Good Condition No Dust Jacket
69 pages, size 7 inches tall by 4.5 inches. Illustrated portrait frontispiece. ' If an introduction were needed to Mrs. Whitman's Edgar Poe and his Critics, no better words could be found than the following tribute of George William Curtis, originally published in Harper's Weekly in 1860:- In reading the exquisitely tender, subtle, sympathetic, and profoundly appreciative sketch of Edgar Poe, which has just been issued under this title, it is impossible not to remember the brave woman's arm thrust through the slide to serve as a bolt against the enemy. . . . The author, with an inexpressible grace, reserve, and tender, heroic charity, having a right which no-other person has to speak, tells, in a simple, transparent, and quiet strain, what she thinks of his career and genius. ... In the delicate reticence of the book, in its tone of inward music, - as if the singer were humming a melody beneath the song she sings, - there is a pensive and peculiar charm. But it is not a eulogy: it is a criticism which is profound by the force of sympathy, and vigorous by its clear comprehension. The life and genius of Edgar Poe have created a special literature of their own. Edgar Poe and his Critics was the earliest book to vindicate Poe from the malice of his enemies, and to unveil something of the mystery of his life. It was the tribute of a poet to a poet, and of a woman to the character of a man to whom she was betrothed, and from whom she was strangely separated in the last year of his life. Edgar Poe and his Critics is an essential part of the literature which, in England, France, and America, irradiates the name of Poe. Mrs. Whitman's poems,' the companion volume to Edgar Poe and his Critics, contains a striking group of poems relating to Poe, of much biographical value. They are entitled Remembered Music, Our Island of Dreams, The last Flowers, Song, Withered Flowers, The Phantom Voice, o Arcturus in October, Resurgemus, Arcturus in April, The Portrait, and the Six Sonnets to --, which are rivalled in passionate beauty only by Mrs. Browning's Sonnets from the Portuguese. Edgar Poe and his Critics has been some time out of print. The present edition is published to meet the demand of friends and admirers of Edgar Poe and of Sarah Helen Whitman. W. F. C. '. Book - Good - in green boards with gilt lettering and gilt raven to the front board - some marking to the boards and some bumping and rubbing to the extreme corners, extreme edges and extreme ends of the spine, some sunning to the spine. Golden Book of Ballads, Bell G K A [Edited By]
33 Bell G K A [Edited By]
Golden Book of Ballads
UK Routledge
Hardcover Good Condition
From The Golden Anthologies Series. Undated as is the British Library copy but appears to be early 1900's. 288 pages, size 6.25 inches tall by 4 inches, with an index of ballads and first lines.' The following selection is meant to explain itself. Almost all the poems printed are ballads in the correct technical sense of 'stories told in song,' the two or three exceptions, such as The Lyke- Wake Dirge, or Waly Waly (given because of their shortness), being excellent examples of the same class of poetry, though technically just not ballads. In the present anthology, unlike others of the series, the reader will look in vain for an Index of Authors. Part of the fascination of the ballads is their lack of ' authority,' their impersonality. No one 'wrote' them, no one put his name to them. They grew, spontaneously and, sometimes one might think, almost at random. In the best way they are popular; the people, if not their author (and into the troubled seas of controversy we do not wish to enter), was their sponsor, and in some sense, broad or narrow, their creator. As such impersonal, unconscious, yet singularly beautiful poems, quite apart from debates and theories about them, every reader can appreciate and enjoy them. Efforts have been made to give an accurate and scholarly text, though it should be noticed that, for the convenience of the reader and to avoid distracting his attention by interruptions in the verses, the square brackets with which some editors enclose the single letters occasionally, or the single lines very rarely, added on the best authority, are omitted. Further, the selection of one version from many others has been, and had to be, a matter of taste, the oldest or the longest version being by no means as a matter of course the best; but the editor hopes that his choice will, on the whole, commend itself as wise and agreeable. The editor would like to express his deep sense of obligation to Professor Child's great Collection of Ballads, which has been his constant help, and the hope that this anthology, necessarily small, will send on many to that magnificent treasure house '. Book - in Good red boards with some marking and some wearing, the lettering to the spine has faded away. Contents, slight glimpse of the webbing at the front hinge but still nice and tight, light spotting to the endpapers, title pages and last couple of pages of the index, previous owner's inscription, otherwise clean and tightly bound. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 500 grams. Category: Poetry; Hardcover A145-1164 0.26

Hundred Sonnets
UK Ernest Benn
1929 First Edition Hardcover Good Condition Good 8.5 inches tall by 5.5 inches
100 pages. Eden Phillpotts is best known as a novelist and dramatist of the first rank. It is not commonly known that during a large part of his life he has been slowly and quietly composing these sonnets. He has selected this most difficult of verse forms as the medium through which to express his philosophy of life. One hundred sonnets must cover a wide range of subjects. Among them many readers of widely different tastes will find some thought of their own matched and clarified and given shape in lines of great beauty. Almost every reader will find particular enjoy ment in these sonnets, in which Mr. Phillpotts praises his own country and some of its greater men. Since Elizabeth Barrett Browning's Sonnets from the Portuguese, no collection on a similar scale has been made of sonnets by a distinguished writer. John Deth And Other Poems, Aiken, Conrad

John Deth And Other Poems
US Charles Scribner
1930 First Edition Hardcover Fine Condition Good 9.5 inches tall by 6.5 inches
?This the author's first book of new poems since 1925. It is a book that has been eagerly awaited, and reveals the continued growth, along characteristic lines, of a poet whose unique contribution to American letters is already beyond question. Among living poets there are few who uniformly achieve so perfect a balance between sheer music and solid intellectual substance. The volume takes its title from the longer poem, John Deth, with which it opens, a poem strangely individual in theme and treatment, and in the true Aiken manner. This is followed by a sonnet sequence of great force and beauty. Other poems include The PomecitronTree,Changing Mind, with its remarkable fantasy symbolization, and a number of briefer narrative and dramatic lyrics.? Book in Fine [much better than Very Good] brown boards with gilt lettering. Contents, some light spotting to the paste downs and light browning to the free front and rear free end paper otherwise clean bright and tightly bound. Dust Jacket Fair - some loss to the edges and corners, rubbing to the edges and browned, price clipped. Size: 9.5 inches tall by 6.5 inches. 140 pages. Quantity Available: 1.
