A Wounded Thing Must Hide: In Search of Libbie Custer
London Bloomsbury Publishing PLC
2002 0747549494 / 9780747549499 First Edition Hardcover New New Octavo (standard book size)
320 Pages. The dustwrapper benefits from an additional clear archival wrapper for protection. Brilliant, Bizarre but not in any sense a conventional biography A Wounded Thing Must Hide is Jeremy Poolman's first, fiercely original foray into non-fiction. Haunted by the death of his own wife, Karen, the author follows Libbie Custer, the wife of General Custer, through her extraordinary life in search of he knows not what. He vividly recreates key scenes in Libbie's life meeting the Empress Elizabeth of Austria, Tsar Alexander III and Henry James and details the glorious, wayward career of the General himself, culminating in the slaughter at Little Big Horn. Through the tangibly real recreation of the historical events that are important to the narrator, the author of Skin gets under the skin, gets to the places other biographies cannot reach. Pehaps through exploring a widow's determination to protect her husband's damaged reputation, he can find a way to deal with his own loss. Perhaps by exploring Libbie's and Custer's enduring love he can find a form for his own. Here, obliquely, biography bleeds into autobiography. Size: Octavo (standard book size). 320 pages. On the day after thanksgiving, 1868, George Armstrong Custer and the Seventh Cavalry attack a sleeping Cheyenne village on the banks of the Washita. Ironically, it soon becomes known that the village was that of Black Kettle, the foremost peace chief of the Cheyenne Nation. Amidst the heartless and senseless slaughter of men, women, and children, the Seventh Cavalry discovers a white woman living among the Cheyenne. Book Description: There is no word in the Cheyenne language for forgiveness. On the day after Thanksgiving, 1868, George Armstrong Custer and the Seventh Cavalry attack a sleeping Cheyenne village on the banks of the Washita. Ironically, it later becomes known that the village attacked was that of Black Kettle, the foremost peace chief of the Cheyenne Nation. Amidst the heartless and senseless slaughter of men, women, and children, the Seventh Cavalry discovers a white woman living among the Cheyenne. Her name is Eden Murdoch, and she was presumed dead years before. While the army expects to use her for propaganda purposes and to refute the accusations that the Cheyenne village posed no threat to white settlers, Eden refuses to take part in any such propaganda: to acknowledge that the army rescued her from a savage society. Eden avoids giving the details of her story to any of the officers; she will say only that she considered her Cheyenne husband and his other wives family. Custer's young and inexperienced aide-de-camp, Captain Brad Randall, is assigned the task of looking after Eden and locating her family. Beginning to doubt Custer's actions and struggling to act honorably, Brad is both fascinated and perplexed by Eden's eccentric behavior. He becomes obsessed with learning the truth behind Eden's bizarre journey, and when Eden begins to reveal it to him, his own future changes. Eden and Brad unexpectedly set in motion events that will echo all the way to the Little Bighorn. Size: 22.1 x 14.9 x 3.3 cm. 398 pages. Quantity Available: 1. Category: History; General Custer. Archaeological Insights into the Custer Battle: An Assessment of the 1984 Field Season
University of Oklahoma Press
1987 0806120657 / 9780806120652 First Edition Softcover New Large Octavo
128 Pages. Book Description: In August, 1983, a grassfire raged up Deep Ravine and across the dry, grass-covered battlefield where, in 1876, men of the Seventh U.S. Cavalry under George Armstrong Custer had fought and died at the hands of a Sioux and Cheyenne force led by Sitting Bull. The removal of the normally dense ground cover revealed enough evidence to suggest that an archaeological survey would be fruitful and perhaps could address some unanswered questions about the battle.Describing archaeological investigations during the first year (1984) of a two-year survey, this book offers a detailed analysis of the physical evidence remaining after the battle. Precise information regarding the locations of artifacts and painstaking analyses of the artifacts themselves have uncovered much new information about the guns used in the battle by the victorious Indian warriors. Not only have the types of guns been identified, but through the use of archaeological and criminal-investigative techniques the actual numbers of firearms can now be estimated. This analysis of the battlefield, which represents a significant advance in methodology, shows that the two forces left artifacts in what can be defined as combatant patterns. What did happen after Custer's trumpeter, John Martin-dispatched with an order for Captain Benteen to be quick-turned and saw the doomed battalion for the last time? Written to satisfy both professional and layman, this book is a vital complement to the historical record. Size: Large Octavo. 128 pages. Quantity Available: 1. Category: History; General Custer. Archaeological Perspectives on the Battle of the Little Bighorn: The Final Report
University of Oklahoma Press
1989 0806121793 / 9780806121796 First Edition Hardcover New New Large Octavo
328 Pages. The dustwrapper benefits from an additional clear archival wrapper for protection. Book Description: Ever since the Custer massacres on June 25, 1876, the question has been asked: What happened - what REALLY happened - at the Battle of the Little Bighorn? We know some of the answers, because half of George Armstrong Custer's Seventh Cavalry - the men with Major Marcus Reno and Captain Frederick Benteen - survived the fight, but what of the half that did not, the troopers, civilians, scouts, and journalist who were with Custer? Now, because a grass fire in August 1983 cleared the terrain of brush and grass and made possible thorough archaeological examinations of the battlefield in 1984 and 1985, we have many answers to important questions. On the basis of the archaeological evidence presented in this book, we know more about what kinds of weapons were used against the cavalry. We know exactly where many of the men fought, how they died, and what happened to their bodies at the time of or after death. We know how the troopers were deployed, what kind of clothing they wore, what kind of equipment they had, how they fought. Through the techniques of historical archaeology and forensic anthropology, the remains and grave of one of Custer's scouts, Mitch Boyer, have been identified. And through geomorphology and the process of elimination, we know with almost 100 percent certainty where the twenty-eight missing men who supposedly were buried en masse in Deep Ravine will be found. Size: Large Octavo. 328 pages. Quantity Available: 1. Category: History; General Custer. ISBN: 0806121793. ISBN/EAN: 9780806121796. Hardcover 189399 1.00

Battle of Little Big Horn: A Comprehensive Study.
Upton & Sons
2001 0912783346 / 9780912783345 First Edition Hardcover New 3.2 x 22.2 x 28.6 cm
373 Pages. Pennington critically examines the statements and testimonies of participants (both Indian and white) as well as other writer's scenarios concerning the battle and its aftermath. The development of the battle is reconstructed after evaluating Reno's attack orders and his actions after separating from Custer and crossing Ford B., the sightings of Custer on the ridge, the statements of Sergeant Kanipe and Trumpeter Martin, Arikara and Crow accounts, including a deep study of Curley's stories. Twenty-seven Sioux and Cheyenne accounts are skillfully dissected and integrated into Pennington's analysis. Statements given at the Reno Court of Inquiry in 1879 and the confusing time zone/watch synchronizing-problem is addressed. Of special interest to Battle of the Little Big Horn students will be the author's analyses of the writings of fourteen of the leading Custer experts who have written extensively on the battle. Pennington has evaluated the writings of Robert Ege, Charles Kuhlman, Thomas Marquis, W.A. Graham, Jerome Greene, Richard Hardorff, Douglas Ellison, Fred Dustin, David Humphreys Miller, John Gray and James Willert and presents his candid opinions of their Little Big Horn conclusions. Pennington says, ...to arrive at a more accurate conception of the battle one has to be objectively critical of others' viewpoints, just as they should be critical of those I support. This book is a fresh approach to the subject and well worthy of inclusion in the Battle of the Little Big Horn Series, of which this is Volume Three. Full-color just-jacket (C.M. Russell's Custer's Last Fight), 373 pages, photos, maps, index, bibliography, 3.5+11 inches to match previous volumes in the series. Robert M. Utley says, This is a provocative, highly personal analysis of the manifold issues of the Battle of the Little Big Horn. Pennington has done his homework, knows his subject thoroughly, and boldly sets forth his own conclusions and his criticisms of others, both primary and secondary. He will spark plenty of debate, but he is certainly worth studying. Size: 3.2 x 22.2 x 28.6 cm. 373 pages. Quantity Available: 1. Category: History; General Custer. ISBN: 0912783346. Prometheus Books
2003 1591020662 / 9781591020660 First Edition Hardcover New New 16 x 1.7 x 23.6 cm
210 Pages. For more than one hundred twenty-five years virtually every history book in print has contended that no white man survived the Battle of the Little Bighorn, where Custer made his famous last stand. This book provides compelling proof that at least one member of the Seventh Cavalry, a man named William Heath, did indeed escape. In this intriguing analysis of hitherto neglected historical documents, Vincent J. Genovese provides verifiable evidence that dispels the long-held myth that none of Custer's soldiers survived the massacre that took place in Montana on June 25, 1876. Genovese chronicles the life of this Lazarus of the Little Bighorn, who joined the army at age 27 after fleeing from Pennsylvania under threats on his life. Documents show that Billy Heath lived in a small coal-mining town in Pennsylvania and that he enlisted in the Seventh Cavalry in 1875, not long before the fateful battle. Further, U.S. Army records verify that he was one of the soldiers at the Little Bighorn. His name also appears on a list of those killed in action and is inscribed on the official monument that stands at the battle site. What makes Genovese's contribution to the history of this famous event so interesting are public records that he here introduces, which show indisputably that William Heath lived on for fourteen more years after the Battle of the Little Bighorn. Birth records from his hometown in Schuylkill County, PA, indicate that he fathered seven children before dying in obscurity. His gravestone still exists in the local cemetery. This is a unique and fascinating re-evaluation of a storied event in American history, which will surely provoke controversy. Size: 16 x 1.7 x 23.6 cm. 210 pages. Quantity Available: 1. Carroll died in the summer of 1990 and left behind a vast body of work that added greatly to the scholarly study of Custer, and his writings should be considered the equal of Graham, Kuhlman, Brininstool, et al. Carroll devoted much of his life to the study of George Armstrong Custer, and wrote or edited many books on the subject. On his death his collection passed to his long time friend and associate Robert Aldrich, and it was finally sold at auction around 1996 by PBA. 463 Pages. Book Club Edition. The dustwrapper benefits from an additional clear archival wrapper for protection. With the ending of the American Civil War, the regular Army turned its eyes once more to the West and embarked on a final, massive drive against the still-unconquered Indian tribes of the Great Plains and the South-West. In command was Major General William Tecumseh Sherman, hero of Atlanta and, in 1866, ruler of a military domain that stretched from the Mississippi to the Rockies and from Texas to the border with Canada. Under him were officers such as Sheridan, Hancock, Custer, who were to become forever associated with the bloodiest battles of the Indian Wars, and men who were to be involved in more than 1000 combat actions, from the first skirmishes with the Sioux over the Bozeman Trail defences in 1866 to the final tragedy of Wounded Knee in 1890. Boston Daily Globe 1909. Stories of General Custer. PLUS Boston Evening Record 1884 John Ryan Interviews. PLUS Sitting Bull - John Ryan Letters to Walter Camp. 103 page manuscript.

First Edition Not Relevant Very Good Condition
This document has been compiled by John M. Carroll. He has even gone so far as to insert hand drawn original illustrations which have been signed by D. D. Moore. In total 103 leaves. The piece starts with Carroll giving some background history of General Custer. He then goes on to focus on Custer's early life in which he examines it closely, and then his rise to General at such a young age, and this information spans over 38 pages which include 3 hand drawn illustrations on card all stuck to the pages with cellotape. Next comes the section from Boston Evening Records 1884. Carroll reports that 'important and most interesting evidence has come into a Record reporter's hands.' Before Carroll explains what this is he recaps the events leading up to Custer's demise in the Battle of the Little Big Horn. Then follows a transcript of a meeting held between the Record reporter, John Ryan (a former soldier with Custer) and Sitting Bull. This is a very interesting piece of evidence and is a really good read. You will struggle to find something else like this as it is extremely rare. This transcript of the conversation covers 8 pages. Next follows some John Ryan letters. It is in these that Ryan is explaining his side of what happened during the fight and afterwards. There are then some questions put to Ryan from Camp. These letters and question and answers span over 57 pages and include a newspaper cutting, a card stuck onto the pages with cellotape and some photocopies of army paperwork. The card appears to be John Ryan's own. It has his name at the top, his ranks and divisions in the army, including his work with Custer against the KKK and other white supremacist groups in the South, followed by his career in the police force. It could be described as a form of 'memorium card' possibly published in celebration of his achievements, maybe for the 50th anniversary of the battle, the same year that Ryan died, 1926. John Ryan died on October 14th 1926, at 29 Auburndale Avenue, West Newton, MA, which incidentally was the house where he was born. Carroll doesn't provide a conclusion or summary to this huge piece of work but does include a lot of original and new information that may not have been seen elsewhere. This documentation really is a one of a kind. Not only does it include an eye witness account to what happened in the fight but it is also illustrated and well researched. Bison
2003 080329834X / 9780803298347 First Edition Softcover Fine Condition 15.2 x 1.5 x 22.9 cm
2nd Edition, 256 Pages. Front cover is slightly curled. Otherwise a nice clean copy. Buffalo Bill: Last of the Great Scouts is the entertaining and fascinating story of William F. Cody, known to millions for over a century as the legendary Buffalo Bill. Born in a log cabin in Iowa, he was a buffalo hunter, stagecoach driver, Pony Express rider, Civil War soldier, and a scout for the U.S. army before beginning his career as the star of Buffalo Bill?s Wild West, which electrified audiences around the world from 1883 to 1917. Bill?s sister, Helen Cody Wetmore, has written an affectionate biography that recalls fully both the man and the legend, his colorful personality and ironic wit, as well as his celebrated international status. Some of her anecdotes read like the dime novels they were probably based on, but others provide fascinating glimpses of frontier life. Before becoming a showman, Cody tried his luck as a land speculator, a hotelkeeper, and a justice of the peace. These pages also show the author herself growing up on the wild frontier. Humorous and informative, Buffalo Bill introduces us to an unforgettable and controversial figure in American frontier history. This commemorative edition includes the full text of the original 1899 edition, a foreword and afterword by novelist Zane Grey, illustrations by Frederic Remington, E. W. Deming, and Rosa Bonheur from a rare 1903 edition, and an introduction by scholar Joy S. Kasson. Helen Cody Wetmore was one of five sisters of Buffalo Bill and her book Buffalo Bill was often sold at Buffalo Bill?s Wild West shows. Joy S. Kasson is chair of the American Studies Department at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. She is the author of Buffalo Bill?s Wild West: Celebrity, Memory, and Popular History. Campaigning With Custer, 1868-69
University of Nebraska Press
1988 0803291744 / 9780803291744 First Edition Softcover As New 14 x 1.2 x 22 cm
239 Pages. First Bison Book Printing. General Philip Sheridan's 1868-69 winter campaign against the Cheyennes and allied tribes was the most successful post-Civil War Indian expedition. Many of the participants, including Sheridan and his favorite combat commander, George A. Custer, left memoirs of the campaign. The narratives of newspaper correspondent De B. Randolph Keim, Sheridan's Troopers on the Borders, and seventh Cavalry captain Albert Barnitz, Life in Custer's Cavalry, have been published as Bison Books. All of these accounts however, present the campaign from the perspective of the top command. In this work David L. Spotts gives them the keen observations of an intelligent, perceptive young volunteer enlisted man. His narrative, rich in detail, may well be the best memoir of that campaign. Spotts offers a stirring account of the terrible winter march of the Nineteenth Kansas, the Battle of the Washita, the founding of Fort Sill, and Custer's rescue of the sweetwater captives. His tale is populated with colorful characters, including hard-edged Phil Sheridan, dashing George Custer, scouts California Joe and Jack Stillwell, and the bold Kiowa chief Satanta. Spott's memoir is good history and high adventure. Size: 14 x 1.2 x 22 cm. 239 pages. Quantity Available: 1. Category: History; General Custer. ISBN: 0803291744. ISBN/EAN: 9780803291744. 290 Pages. Reprint. Some light marking to all edges of the book and both sides of the cover. 'Not only in American history but in all history it is hard to find stories as moving, noble and dramatic as this one. The highest praise one could give any book about it would be to say that it was worthy of its subject. Cheyenne Autumn deserves that accolade' - Saturday Review of Literature. 'Actually, Mari Sandoz does more than just tell the story. With her customary skill, she manages to recreate a man, a scene, an event, a page from history, so that through her prose this great story of the struggle of a small band of homesick, mistreated, half-starved Indians against the military might of a major nation takes on the stature of an American epic' - Chicago Sunday Tribune.'Because of my bias in favor of all accounts and stories of the Old West, I hesitate to state categorically that this is a great book, but I have a deep suspicion that it is' - New York Times. In the autumn of 1878 a band of Cheyenne Indians set out from Indian Territory, where they had been sent by the U.S. government, to return to their homeland in the Yellowstone country. This saga of their heart-breaking fifteen-hundred-mile flight is by the author of Crazy Horse: The Strange Man of the Oglalas and Old Jules, also available as Bison Books. Book Description: 'Not only in American history but in all history it is hard to find stories as moving, noble and dramatic as this one. The highest praise one could give any book about it would be to say that it was worthy of its subject. Cheyenne Autumn deserves that accolade' - Saturday Review of Literature. Bison
1998 0803273118 / 9780803273115 First Edition Softcover Fine Condition 13.3 x 1.1 x 20.3 cm
196 Pages. Reprint. Back cover is very lightly marked. Only six Cheyenne Indians (but thirty-two Sioux) died in the fighting at the Little Bighorn River that wiped out the command of General George Custer. Brave Wolf, the son of the prophet Old Brave Wolf, later recalled the courage of the doomed men in the Seventh Cavalry. He was at the scene on that bloodiest of Sundays in the summer of 1876. Brave Wolf and twelve other members of his tribe tell what happened in Cheyenne Memories of the Custer Fight, compiled and edited by Richard G. Hardorff. Between 1895 and 1908 naturalist George Bird Grinnell talked with Brave Wolf, American Horse, and other combatants at the Little Bighorn. Researcher Walter Mason Camp sought out Tall Bull, Bull Hump, and Little Wolf, whose voices are added to these pages. Casting light on events is the skilled Cheyenne interpreter Long Forehead, also known as Willis Rowland. Tribal historian John Stands in Timber, who gathered material from Cheyenne elders, describes the movements of Custer and his soldiers. Hamlin Garland's interview with Two Moons recreates the noise and dust and smoke and frenzied confusion at the Little Bighorn. Richard G. Hardorff compiled and edited the companion volume Lakota Recollections of the Custer Fight, also a Bison Book. Robert Wooster is chair of the Department of Humanities at Texas A&M University at Corpus Christi. His Nelson A. Miles and the Twilight of the Frontier Army and The Military and United States Indian Policy 1865-1903 are both available as Bison Books.
