A Christian Theology of Place. (Explorations in Practical, Pastoral and Empirical Theology), Inge, John

A Christian Theology of Place. (Explorations in Practical, Pastoral and Empirical Theology)
UK Ashgate Publishing Limited
2003 0754634981 / 9780754634980 First Edition Hardcover Very Good Condition 1.9 x 16.5 x 23.5 cm
208 Pages. Both bottom corners of the board are a little bumped. Front and back board are marked. The place in which we stand is often taken for granted and ignored in our increasingly mobile society. Differentiating between place and space, this book argues that place has very much more influence upon human experience than is generally recognised and that this lack of recognition, and all that results from it, are dehumanizing. John Inge presents a rediscovery of the importance of place, drawing on the resources of the Bible and the Christian tradition to demonstrate how Christian theology should take place seriously. A renewed understanding of the importance of place from a theological perspective, has much to offer in working against the dehumanizing effects of the loss of place. Community and places each build the identity of the other; this book offers important insights in a world in which the effects of globalization continue to erode people's rootedness and experience of place. I learned immensely from having read it.' Stanley Hauerwas, Duke Divinity School, USA 'This welcome book is a perceptive and helpful statement of why and how Christian faith needs to be embodied in places and activities. It significantly enriches theunderstanding of faith, and provides important help in responding to those who question religioussymbols and institutions today.' Daniel W Hardy, Cambridge, UK 'A study that I judge to be on target in powerful and compelling ways. The opening chapter on Hellenistic background is powerful, the development in sacramental directions is most helpful. The work on the Old Testament is sound and well articulated. The push toward a 'relational' understanding of place, and the appreciation of the distinction between place and space presented in this book, will prove of great value to a wide range of readers.' Walter Brueggemann, William Marcellus McPheeters Professor of Old Testament, Columbia Theological Seminary, USA 'John Inge's book is a welcome addition to the small but growing volume of literature reflecting theologically on the fact that we are necessarily situated beings... I agree with Inge that a new respect for place is vital in a world remorselessly globalised by the big corporations and the new imperialism; and in that respect his book is especially timely and helpful.' The Church Times '... this is an excellent book. It makes a much needed contribution at a time when so much of the 'place' is derided, and all is movement and rootlessness.' Anvil 'The eleven-page bibliography shows the impressive breadth of his scholarship, and the footnotes [...] show the depth of his engagement with his sources... Readers approaching the book from an interest in Christian theology will find that Inge has made his case thoroughly and convincingly; they will not thereafter be able to ignore 'place' as a theological topic... Inge's approach is to be commended for accepting modernity's challenge to think critically, even as he rejects modernity's false assumptions.' Implicit Religion '... John Inge's book is an excellent resource for those seeking a survey of recent work on the role of place in Christian theological reflection... a welcome addition to a growing field of inquiry.' Modern Theology '... a timely and constructive book.' Rural Theology 'This is a very well researched book written by a former canon of Ely Cathedral... this book is a useful resource for study and reflection for a wide range of readers seeking to address ideas of place in a changing world, not least those studying for leadership and ministry in churches having to face up to the closure of so many sacred places.' Journal of Adult Theological Education '... stimulating and important book... This book is a timely and rich offering to sacramental and indeed systematic theology.' Theology 'John Inge's book offers a valuable unveiling of place as an integral category in Christian traditions and in Western society.' A Liberal Theology for the Twenty-First Century : A Passion for Reason, Langford, Michael J.

A Liberal Theology for the Twenty-First Century : A Passion for Reason
UK Ashgate Publishing Limited
2001 0754605035 / 9780754605034 First Edition Hardcover Fine Condition 2.5 x 15.9 x 23.5 cm
"Liberal theology, in its typical form, represents the attempt to approach religion from a rational perspective without denying or belittling the importance of religious experience and religious commitment. Versions of liberal theology can be found in all the great religions. This book is primarily concerned with a Christian tradition that goes back to the second century and reached a high point in the seventeenth. This tradition includes a method of inquiry which, when re-evaluated in the light of recent discussions on the nature of rationality and applied to contemporary issues, reveals that there are versions of materialism, monism and theism that can accord with rationality. While liberal theology cannot demonstrate the truth of theism, it can present it not only as one of the rational options, but as an option that has uniquely attractive characteristics, and when the liberal tradition is taken at its best, it can support a version of Christianity which continues to refer to God as a transcendent 'reality', and which can continue to support recognizable doctrines of incarnation, redemption and Trinity. The liberal theology introduced and advanced in this book can be contrasted with many recent 'radical theologies', and could be called 'liberal orthodoxy'. Students of philosophy, theology and religious studies, as well as clergy and interested lay readers, will find this an accessible insight into liberal theology and to current debates on materialism, atheism and inter-faith dialogue. Contents: Introduction; Where to begin?; Materialism; Religious experience and monism; The meaning of theism; The traditional arguments for the existence of God; The Trinitarian option; Some personal options; Appendix 1: Miracles revisited; Appendix 2: Three suggested creeds; Appendix 3: A Meditation; Index." This is a most welcome book which will serve well as a reference for any liberals and modernists out there who are feeling beleaguered in the post-modern times...(Langford) unravels for his readers a ""liberal orthodoxy"" which would be eminently preachable in any enquiring parish...this is a theology for the twenty-first century that could well still be being read at the turn of the next.' Reviews in Religion and Theology '[Readers] will welcome what is a balanced and persuasive engagement of a reasonable orthodoxy with different contemporary outlooks. The aim is to affirm the rational attractiveness of Christian theism... With no dependence on authorities it engages in rational discussion with a tolerance and sensitivity to differing positions that encourages further exploration of the issues. The sustained debate thus offered is remarkly accessible... It is specifically directed to the ordinary intelligent reader, and in this it must readily be recognised to have succeeded... many who have read it once will almost certainly wish to return to parts again, and to use it as a resource book in this field. Time spent with it will be amply justified.' Prospero 'This is a most welcome book which will serve well as a reference for any liberals and modernists out there who are feeling beleaguered in those post-modern times. Its densely packed script is well worth the purchase of a new pair of reading glasses for a comprehensive glimpse into a closely argued rational religious perspective.' A Moral Ontology for a Theistic Ethic : Gathering the Nations in Love and Justice

2003 0754631575 / 9780754631576 First Edition Softcover Very Good Condition 1.3 x 15.2 x 22.9 cm
"240 Pages. Front of the book is a little rubbed. This work develops a moral ontology for a theistic ethic that engages the work of contemporary moral and political philosophers, and reaffirms the relevance of a theistic tradition of God's relation to the world reflected in the fundamental teachings of Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Drawing on recent thought in the non-religious fields of psychology and political and moral philosophy, which build around the concept of human flourishing in community, Kirkpatrick argues that a theistic ethic need not be the captive of parochial or sectarian theological camps. He proposes a common or universal ethic that transcends the fashionable ethnocentric ""incommensurate differences"" in morality alleged by many post-modern deconstructionists. In the wake of ethnic religious strife post September 11th 2001, this book argues for a common morality built on the inclusivity of love, community, and justice that can transcend sectarian and parochial boundaries." "Every Sunday all over the world people rise up and claim to speak in the name of God. It is an astonishing thing to do and an astonishing claim to make. It is small wonder that the sermon has been the focus of debate, discussion and investigation. It has been dismissed as irrelevant in today's culture and has become the butt of numerous jokes and caricatures. Yet the claim persists that these human words in some way can become God's message to these hearers. This collection of twenty-nine articles by international experts in the area of homiletics coincides with the revival of interest in preaching over the last twenty-five years. It is practical without being merely tips for preachers; and it offers the necessary theoretical discussion for anyone who wants to take the art of preaching seriously. No important issue has been omitted and, taken as a whole, the book constitutes a first class introduction to the principles, processes, context and theology of preaching. Contributors include: Walter Brueggemann, David Buttrick, Fred Craddock, Edward Farley, John Killinger, Richard Lischer, Thomas Long, Elaine Lawless, Jolyon Mitchell, Cheryl Sanders and Thomas Troeger. Contributors include: Walter Brueggemann, David Buttrick, Fred Craddock, Edward Farley, John Killinger, Richard Lischer, Thomas Long, Elaine Lawless, Jolyon Mitchell, Cheryl Sanders and Thomas Troeger. : Review: Those whose theology avoids the sharp edges of Calvary and Easter don't want to give the sermon more than grudging admission; those who have made Christianity comfortable allow the sermon to decline into a spiritual pep talk or a vaguely Christianised comment on current affairs. But those who take seriously their calling to listen with every fabric of their being to the living God, and to speak with all their skill of his love and grace in the gospel, find it exhausting but exhilarating. My hope and prayer is that this book will be of real help in challenging the first two approaches, and in encouraging and directing the third.' From the Foreword by the Bishop of Durham, the Rt Revd Dr N. T. Wright 'One of the things that both fascinates and terrifies preachers is advice from other preachers. The fascination comes from the recognition of a common call. The fear comes from our sense of inadequacy in the face of great responsibility. This reader is an outstanding and unique collection from preachers and theologians, which is both fascinating and liberating in showing how the call to preach can be developed in astonishing diversity. It is both practically and theologically stimulating for all who are called to preach good news'. Dr David Wilkinson, Fellow in Christian Apologetics and Associate Director of the Centre for Christian Communication, St Johns College, University of Durham 'This volume skillfullysamplesseminal resourcesoffered to preachers in the last several years for vocational discernment and renewal. Nourished by insights fromdistinguished colleagues, homileticians andpastors alikewillgain strength for the journey.' Revd Dr David J. Schlafer, Homiletical Formation, Washington, DC. 'At last! Distilled wisdom about preaching today by 'A' list writers and practitioners.' Martyn Atkins, Director of Postgraduate Studies, Cliff College, UK '... a welcome addition to my bookshelf and, I expect, several other preachers and homiletic professors will find a comfortable home for it as well.' Worship 'The book is [...] more than a handbook. It is a guide to the intense debate which has taken place in homiletics over the past thirty years... The quality of the articles is high, and that gives them universal application... The editors have completed their difficult task with great skill, and have given us a most valuable anthology.' Theology 'This is a seriously good book...this volume is well conceived and well compiled: it has an outstanding introductory chapter by David Day which allows the reader to get their bearings and see how the various parts fit together into the whole, and the collection stands as a very fine introduction to the current literature and thinking on preaching. It deserves to be in the library of every preacher who takes their task seriously...I have rarely read a collection of pieces where the standard is as uniformly impressive. It is a bonus that none of them is too long, and all are thoroughly digestible...My description of this book doesn't do justice to the richness of the collection. It has found its way quickly on to our reading lists in college, but will also provide great stimulus to pastors and preachers. A section at a time it could be a useful focus for ministers' study groups, or be used in other ways to aid personal reflection and development. Highly recommended.' Regent's Reviews 'This book, which is a collection of twenty-nine papers on preaching, is very welcome. It brings together articles that are mostly worth rescuing from the obscurity of transient journals and presents them in a thematic way for a new audience.' Evangelical Quarterly '... the volume will be helpful to all preachers whether they are just starting or have been called for many years. This book is not one to be read and then put away on the shelf, rather, it is a book to keep on the desk and use to support fresh thoughts and ideas as the preacher's calling grows and matures.' Rural Theology 'The articles are practical without being merely a collection of tips for preachers, and no important issue has been omitted. "420 Pages. Few marks on front and back boards. ""Agriculture and Rural Connections in the Pacific"" brings together key studies from across several disciplines to examine the history of trans-Pacific rural and agricultural connections and to show an agriculturally-oriented Pacific World in the making since the 1500s. Historical globalization is commonly understood as a process that is propelled by industry or commerce, yet the seeds of global integration - literally as well as metaphorically - were sown much earlier, when crops and plants dispersed, agricultural systems proliferated, and rural people migrated across oceans. One goal of this volume is to demonstrate that the historical processes of globalization contained an agrarian dimension in which sub-national and national spaces were shaped in part through the influence of forces that originated in distant lands. Social and economic trends emanating from outside local territories had large impacts on demographic change, choices of agrarian systems, and the cropping patterns in many domestic settings. A second goal is to encourage readers to abandon the traditional Euro-centric view of events that shaped the Pacific region. The modern history of the Pacific World was undoubtedly shaped by Western imperialism, colonialism, and European trade and migration, but the present volume seeks to balance the interpretation of those forces with an emphasis on the increasing intensity of trans-Pacific interactions through rural labor migration and agricultural production." "246 Pages. Peter Davies examines some of the issues arising from the recent introduction of contemporary English language into Anglican worship, especially in the authorised liturgy of England and New Zealand. Three key questions are addressed. Are there criteria for worship which are satisfactorily fulfilled by contemporary language? To what extent is the language used in modern liturgies truly contemporary, reflecting its social and cultural milieu? How has the introduction of contemporary language been received by regular Anglican worshippers? Based on a large body of evidence, the author reaches conclusions which are both reassuring and disturbing. Contents: Foreword; Introduction. 470 Pages. Side and bottom edge of the board are bumped. Both boards are slightly marked. Alternative religions attract great public, academic and government interest in our apparently post-Christian society. Yet how did all the 'alternatives' develop, what are their beliefs and practices and how significant is their impact in terms of the world's religions and society? This book presents a comprehensive introduction to the major forms of alternative religions: Cults, Sects, New Religious Movements, the New Age, Fundamentalism, Pentecostalism, Ethnic Religions and Quasi-religions. Stephen Hunt presents sociological insights into the rise of alternative religions, their beliefs and practices, their impact, who joins them and why, and how they are being classified and could be re-classified in the future. Public and legal controversies surrounding some alternative religions, such as the so-called 'dangerous cults', are also explored. Offering a broad introduction to alternative religions, this book offers students added insights into contemporary themes such as secularisation, post-modernity, links between religion, healing and human potential, and changes in our global culture. Contents: Introduction; Alternative religion in perspective; Cults; Sectarianism; Christian fundamentalism; Pentecostalism and movements of Christian renewal; New religious movements; Some major new religious movements; The New Age; Neo-Paganism and esoteric spiritualities; Popular forms of religiosity; Human potential and healing movements; World religions and the faiths of ethnic minorities; Quasi-religions; The 'rise' of the alternatives: some implications; Bibliography; Glossary of terms; Index. "Alternative religions attract great public, academic and government interest in our apparently post-Christian society. Contents: Introduction; Alternative religion in perspective; Cults; Sectarianism; Christian fundamentalism; Pentecostalism and movements of Christian renewal; New religious movements; Some major new religious movements; The New Age; Neo-Paganism and esoteric spiritualities; Popular forms of religiosity; Human potential and healing movements; World religions and the faiths of ethnic minorities; Quasi-religions; The 'rise' of the alternatives: some implications; Bibliography; Glossary of terms; Index." "Ambassadors of Christ commemorates 150 years of theological education in Cuddesdon with a collection of substantial essays. It begins with a discussion by Mark Chapman of the revival of theology and education in the early years of the nineteenth century. This is followed with an essay by Alastair Redfern on Samuel Wilberforce as a pastoral theologian, and a revision by Andrew Atherstone of Owen Chadwick's Centenary History in the light of more recent historical research, bringing the discussion up to the 1880s. For the first time, Ripon Hall, which merged with Cuddesdon in 1975, receives a thorough and detailed historical treatment by Michael Brierley. Mark Chapman then discusses the 1960s under Robert Runcie, and a final chapter by Robert Jeffery deals with the theological and churchmanship issues which emerged from the merger. Two marvellous sermons preached at College Festivals by Michael Ramsey and Owen Chadwick are also reproduced in the appendices. This special commemorative volume will appeal to past and present students as well as specialists in nineteenth and twentieth cemtury church history and all those interested in ministerial education and spiritual formation." As we read this excellent memoir of a history both brave and complex, we can be grateful that the Church of England has been so wonderfully served; and we can strengthen our resolve to make sure that such a service is still available to the Church of the future'. Available Now. Book Description: American Religious Leaders traces the history of American religion through the lives of its leaders. More than 250 entries explore America's religious and spiritual leaders from colonial times to today. The book focuses on those who have occupied the spotlight of historical attention in one way or another: the founders, the pioneers, the heretics, and the saints, among others. All have summoned some measure of historical interest and left some record, either through journals and autobiographies of their own or through biographies written by others. Notable figures and leaders from many of the major churches and religious groups in America are covered, including Episcopalians, Presbyterians, Methodists, Catholics, Black Muslims, Jews, and Mormons along with leaders from smaller and lesser-known but no less important religions. They have established schools, founded humanitarian and social welfare organizations, led movements concerned with social equality and civil rights, and proceeded to voice economic, political, and social ideas based on their commitment to their respective religions and the beliefs of their followers. Broadly inclusive, this volume profiles many women, Native Americans, African Americans, and leaders from other traditionally underrepresented groups within American society. - James Lloyd Breck: Episcopal missionary - Edgar Cayce: psychic - Dorothy Day: cofounder of the Catholic Worker movement - Louis Farrakhan: Nation of Islam leader - Henry Highland Garnet: Presbyterian minister, abolitionist - Anne Hutchinson: Puritan lay leader - Pat Robertson: founder of the Christian Broadcasting Network Size: 25.6 x 17.2 x 3.2 cm. 430 pages. An Ecological Christian Anthropology: At Home on Earth?
UK Ashgate Publishing Limited
2005 0754650642 / 9780754650645 First Edition Hardcover Fine Condition Fine 2.5 x 15.9 x 23.5 cm
"270 Pages. In this volume, the author examines aspects of Christian doctrine with reference to an 'ecological theology', asking why Christians as religious believers should engage in 'earthkeeping'." "Book Description: What is the place and vocation of human beings in the earth community? This is the central question that this contribution towards a Christian ecological anthropology addresses. In ecological theology this question is often answered by the affirmation that 'We are at home on earth'. This affirmation rightly responds to the widespread sense of alienation from nature, to the anthropocentrism that pervades much of the Christian tradition and to concerns about the scope of environmental devastation. This book challenges the affirmation that we are at home on earth, examining natural suffering, anxieties concerning human finitude and especially the pervasiveness of evil. The book investigates contributions to ecological theology, South African and African theology, reformed theology and contemporary dialogues between theology and the sciences in search of a thoroughly ecological Christian anthropology. : Review: 'Ernst Conradie [...] addresses this issue from a theological perspective. And he does it well. Ashgate publishing house has already provided several books interesting for the Science and Religion dialogue, and this one will not disappoint the reader... The book gives the reader a well-informed and thorough overview of the topics involved, and will, in my opinion, be a very good book to read while preparing for ECST XI... he certainly challenges the reader to articulate and deepen her own position regarding the place of humans in nature.' ESSSAT News 'The book provides a very valuable resource both for the scholar on approaches to Christian environmental concerns as well those involved in church actions around the environment, seeking bliblical and theological basis for their activities.' Journal of Theology for Southern Africa '...Ernst Conradie has written an impressive book... The great strengths of the book, along with the clarity of its structure, are the breadth and depth of its dialogue partners, and its relentless undaunted trawl through list upon list of issues and their chief protagonists... makes the book an indispensable companion in this rapidly expanding theological field, because it keeps a steady hand while covering a large literature.' Theology : About the Author: Ernst M. Conradie is Associate Professor in the Department of Religion and Theology at the University of the Western Cape, South Africa." Anglican Orders and Defect of Intention, Clark Frances
33 Clark Frances
Anglican Orders and Defect of Intention
UK Longmans Green
1956 First Edition Hardcover Very Good Condition Good
xx, 215 pages, size 8.75 inches tall by 5.5 inches, with an index. ' Ever since the publication of Leo XIII's Bull Apostolicae Curae condemning Anglican Orders, there has been an animated discussion of its meaning, its reasoning, and its dogmatic authority. The controversy has been at times highly acrimonious but of recent years a new eirenic spirit has shown itself and it is in this more peaceful arena that the question of Anglican Orders is debated in the present work by Fr. Clark. The complexity of the subject has given rise to many misunderstandings, and the author frankly admits that these have not been all on one side. Both defenders and critics of the Bull have sometimes adopted untenable positions, and have confused the two issues of ' defect of form ' and ' defect of intention.' It is with the distinction and clarifying of these issues that this book is concerned. Fr. Clark makes a careful examination of the Bull and of the counter-arguments propounded by Lacey, Puller, Dix and other Anglican apologists. He devotes a chapter to the question of the participation of Old Catholic bishops in Anglican ordinations and discusses the recent decision of Convocation with regard to the Church of South India in the light of the Catholic doctrine of intention and the views expressed by Anglo-Catholic spokesmen. There are those who deprecate even the raising of the question of Anglican Orders and urge that the cause of reunion should not be endangered by keeping alive the controversies of the past. The author, while respecting this viewpoint, and fully sharing a longing for the restoration of Christian unity, believes that charity is not ill served by frank discussion and the removal of misunderstandings. His work is entirely free from polemical spirit, and he assumes throughout the good will and good faith of those whose views differ from his own '. Book - in Near Fine [better than Very Good] black boards with gilt lettering - light bumping to the extreme ends of the spine. Contents, light browning to the pastedowns and free endpapers and previous owner's inscription, faint spotting to the page edges, otherwise clean, bright and tightly bound. Ark, the Shroud and Mary: The Untold Truths About the Relics of the Bible
New Page Books,US
2007 1564149242 / 9781564149244 First Edition Softcover Fine Condition 22.7 x 15.4 x 2 cm
319 Pages. Why do the Ark of the Covenant, Mary's reliquary box and Jesus' Coffer all have the same imagery? Was the Ark the container of the Covenant, the Ten Commandments or the Chalice? Does the image of the Shroud of Turin contain a bioelectric field? These questions and others are explored in "The Ark, The Shroud and Mary". Author, Philip Gardiner, recently won the acclaim of both scholars and the reading public with "The Serpent Grail", which united three of the most mysterious objects known to man the Grail, Elixir and Philosophers Stone. Now, in this unique and thought-provoking work Gardiner proves that the Ark of the Covenant, the Shroud of Turin and Mary are united in ways never before imagined. Travelling across the world, from Rome to India, Portugal to Egypt, Gardiner uncovers the trail of the Ark and finds that it does not lead to Ethiopia, as many believe, but instead in a direction that nobody could have imagined. The trail of the Ark takes Gardiner on a hunt into the very heart of an ancient secret society with clandestine meetings in far-off lands. Uniting the myth, tradition, and language of the Ark with the Shroud of Turin, Gardiner then goes on to re-date it, reveal how it was made and identify whose image it actually recreates. Through his new-found contacts in the world of secret societies, Gardiner then shows how this incredible secret was protected by a dual brotherhood throughout time and was the secret source of the enlightenment spoken of by numerous orders from the Sufis to the Knights Templar. Benedictine Idea
UK Burns & Oates
1959 First Edition Hardcover Very Good Condition Good 8.75 inches tall by 5.5 inches
First UK Edition. ?The conception of the relation between man's spiritual and material life which St Benedict enshrined in his Holy Rule one and a half thousand years ago has been one of the most powerful of the formative influences on Western civilization. In this book, Dom Hubert van Zeller, a Benedictine himself and a leading expounder of St Benedict's thought, surveys the entire field of Benedictine life and endeavour from the first foundation at Subiaco to the monastic way of life in our own times. Within the framework of this historical account, however, the author is concerned to show the unchanging nature of the Benedictine idea which remains, in spite of changing ways and altered conditions in life beyond the monastery, a vigorous and living source of inspiration for the present as it has been for so long in the past.?
