Contemporary Review
1878 First Edition Disbound Good Condition Octavo (standard book size)
A particularly interesting selection of material, dealing with this topic from practical aspects, often medical, rather than the more usual moral tendency. The article by Jevons is one of a small number he wrote around this time dealing with practical social issues. To aid clarity in identifying these items they have been numbered 1 to 14 as follows; 1. Experimental Legislation and the Drink Traffic. By W. Stanley Jevons. 1880. 16 pages. 2. Intemperance and the Licensing System. By Alexander Balfour. 1879. 20 pages. 3. The Contrast of Temperance with Abstinence. By James Paget. 1878. 9 pages. 4. The Action of Alcohol. By T. Lauder Brunton. 1878. 10 pages. 5. The Moderate Use of Alcohol. True Temperance. By Albert J. Bernays. 1878. 7 pages. 6. Advantages and Disadvantages of Alcohol. By William W. Gull (edited by Dr. J.C. Bucknill). 1878. 5 pages. 7. The Utility of Alcohol in Health and in Disease. By Charles Murchison. 1878. 5 pages. 8. Alcohol and Individuality; or, Why Did He Become A Drunkard ? By Walter Moxon. 1878. 18 pages. 9. The Action and Uses of Alcoholic Drinks. By Samuel Wilks. 1878. 6 pages. 10. Temperance versus Abstinence. By James Risdon Bennett. 1879. 5 pages. 11. A Casual Conversation on the Subject. By C.B. Radcliffe. 1879. 7 pages. 12. Temperance and its Boundaries. By Joseph Kidd. 1879. 7 pages. 13. The Place and Uses of Alcohol as an Article of Diet. By R. Brundenell Carter. 1879. 8 pages. 14. Results of Experience in the Use of Alcohol. By A.B. Garrod. 1879. 8 pages. Items 3 to 14 have to a large extent been underlined in purple ink in a number of places. They are still entirely readable and legible. Note; these are original articles separated from their respective volumes, not offprints or reprints. Size: Octavo (standard book size). In 1887 Reynolds spoke at the Manchester meeting of the British Association, and proposed that experiments could be conducted ?On Certain Laws Relating to the Regime of Rivers and Estuaries, and on the Possibility of Experiments on a Small Scale'?. The idea was developed through a scale experiment of the Mersey, with tides generated by a hinged tray at the seaward side of the model. Ideas developed from this work showed the possibilities for modelling flow in rivers and estuaries, and it was this fresh work that formed the work examined by the British Association in its three large reports in1889, 1890, and 1891. The research was undertaken by Reynolds in the Whitworth Engineering Laboratory at Owens College, Manchester, and the three Reports were written by Reynolds, describing in great detail the experiments made on model estuaries of hypothetical shape: rectangular, V-shaped, and V-shaped. Three important reports, together with Reynolds' initial key proposal for experiments on a small scale. The collection consists of all Reynolds? published papers on the topic by the British Association : A. On certain laws relating to the regime of rivers and estuaries, and on the possibility of experiments on a small scale'. British Association Report, 1887. 8 pages. B. Report of the committee appointed to investigate the action of waves and currents on the beds and foreshores of estuaries by means of working models'. British Association Report, 1889. 17 pages, 9 folding plates. C. Second report of the committee appointed to investigate the action of waves and currents on the beds and foreshores of estuaries by means of working models'. British Association Report, 1890. 24 pages, 18 folding plates. D. Third report of the committee appointed to investigate the action of waves and currents on the beds and foreshores of estuaries by means of working models'. British Association Report, 1891. 20 pages, 13 folding plates. All in excellent condition, with only minimal age wear. This material benefits from the immediacy and contemporary nature of the moment it is written in, and much of it has been ignored or at best skimmed over in the standard studies, and it provides the opportunity for much further study and fresh commentary on safety at sea. This compelling selection of articles, all written in English, are taken from important 19th century journals. Key pieces include a very important piece by David Brewster on the British Lighthouse System (1833), an interesting detailed discussion on the Parliamentary inquiry into Lighthouses (1835) along with a responses by Alan Stevenson (1835) refuting some of the comments made. There are good illustrated pieces from the Encyclopedia Britannica (1824) on the Bell Rock Lighthouse, and the Encyclopedia Metropolitana (1845) regarding the Eddystone Lighthouse. Francis Conder contributes an extended item on the Engineers and construction of Eddystone and Skerryvore (1880), whilst there are numerous articles with detailed improvements to the mechanisms, lenses, and lighting from amongst others John Wigham (1886), William Swan (1850), and Thomas Stevenson (1871) and Alan Stevenson (1835). J.R. Leifchild summaries numerous official documents on Wrecks, Life Boats and Lighthouses (1862) and there are various articles on Shipwrecks (J.R.McCulloch, 1834), Life Boats (Andrew Henderson, 1857), and Percussion Lights (Cpt. Leach, 1857), amongst others. All published between 1821 and 1893. The majority of the articles are octavo in size, and quite a few, particularly regarding shipwrecks and life saving devices have illustrations, chiefly woodcuts. There are a couple of quartos, plus an engraving, and two small folio Acts of Parliament, and two folio Chambers' Edinburgh Journals. The entire collection runs to over 400 pages. Note; this is a collection of articles all separated and disbound from other volumes, not offprints or reprints. Overall condition is very good, with bright clean, easily readable pages. London HMSO
1871-1895 First Edition Disbound Very Good Condition Journal Octavo (standard book size)
28 articles, consisting of many dozens of treaties and conventions, in total around 200 pages. All disbound from "Hertslet, Treaties & Conventions... between Great Britain and Foreign Powers". A very useful collection of primary source material, concerning the years prior to and following the Treaty of Bern when the UPU was established. The UPU was important for allowing mail to travel freely through countries without having to pay for each leg of that journey. In effect, postage became payable only to the final destination, not all the stops along the way. Along with other measures, such as stamp design rules and harmonizing duties this created an international free movement of correspondence, printed publications, and packets. It had significant influence in the nineteenth century on international trade, scientific research, language, even immigration and emigration, and set standards that would be reflected in the internet age of ISPs, networks, and date interchanges. All articles in good, clean condition. Each treaty is contained in a clear protective sleeve for safe handling, and the whole collection is housed in a box file for smart presentation and ease of shelving. Treaties include; France, 1833: France, 1843: United States, 1851: Denmark, 1851: Switzerland, 1841: Bremen, 1860: Belgium, 1865: Belgium, 1869: France, 1870: Switzerland, 1871: Sandwich Islands. 1874: Switzerland, 1875: Haiti, 1878: Sandwich Islands, 1878: Switzerland, 1878: Switzerland, 1879: Luxembourg, 1880: Switzerland, 1880: Sandwich Islands, 1881: France, 1882: France, 1883: France, 1887: Germany, 1888: South Africa, 1896: East Africa, 1897: Italy, 1899: Norway, 1900: France, 1900. A collection of over 400 rare and uncommon Offprints from the prestigious Journal of The Royal Asiatic Society. A huge and wide ranging selection that would prove very expensive to buy individually and be very time consuming to assemble, if you even could easily do so. A full list of the titles in the collection is available on request. The condition will reflect the fragile and ephemeral format of the production; very good overall. PLEASE NOTE: These are not reprints or extracts, they are rare Offprints, not extracts or reprints. An offprint is produced by the publisher's of journals in very small quantities, with the usual intention of allowing the author to present them to friends or colleagues and for review. The printing is done simultaneously with the main journal, and then they are bound up in specially printed wrappers with the author's name and title printed. They are considered quite collectable and desirable due to their intimate connection to the author of the work, rather than the more mass produced nature of the full journal. The Royal Asiatic Society is dedicated to the serious study of the culture, history and languages of Asia. Founded in 1823 by the Sanskrit scholar Sir Henry Thomas Colebrooke, and has counted many distinguished and important explorers, writers and eminent individuals among its members, including Sir Richard Burton (1821-90), Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941), and Sir Wilfred Thesiger. A collection of 30 important acts, covering the critical early years of the South Sea Company, including the Act establishing the Company in 1711, and running through the Bubble crisis years of the 1720s to the aftermath of the 1730s. Items 1 to 27 are folio format (255mm x 400mm, 10 x 16 inches) and are chiefly extracts from the Statutes at Large, published by Thomas Baskett, 1758. All disbound from larger volumes, no title pages (as issued), and the caption title doesn't usually start at the head of the page, but some way down it. This is quite normal for Statutes. The Sperling references are in relation to a catalogue of 609 items, produced in 1962, listing the holdings in the Kress Library, the British Museum, Columbia University, New York City, & the Goldsmith's Library. The South Sea Company, founded in 1711, had its origin in the idea that the state could sell trading monopolies in return for funds to reduce the national debt. It was granted a monolpoly of the British trade with South America and the Pacific Islands, the riches of which were assumed to be unlimited. Up to 1719 the company appeared prosperous and successful in servicing its responsibility to the national debt, but in 1719 it took on the whole of the national debt in return for further concessions, beating off competition from the Bank of England for the privilege and profits. However, by 1720 speculation in stocks in the company was getting out of hand, and numerous companies were formed copying the techniques, and as the growth in sellers of stock rapidly outweighed the buyers, with the stocks falling from 1000 to 175, in days, and continuing downwards, dragging everyone else, including the Bank of England in their wake. By the year's end thousands had been ruined, and Parliament was investigating the affair. When large scale fraud and corruption was exposed by this investigation, the directors estates and assets were confiscated. The company actually managed to trade on until around 1750, and then sold out its remaining rights to the Spanish government. By 1807 all its rights were finally taken away, and in 1853 the final annuities were redeemed or converted into government stocks. Size: Large Folio. Item Type: Magazine. Quantity Available: 1. A substantial run, covering ten years of this magazine. The magazine has a pictorial full colour front wrap with a photograph on verso, while the back cover is also in colour. It styles itself as a magazine with picture stories, which make up the bulk of the content, and no contributors are named. It appears to be written for a young audience than under Malcolm Saville's editorship and it also adopts a more educational tone, making use of the Initial Teaching Alphabet scheme which was popular as a teaching aid in the sixties. There are 19 volumes, all bound in matching black half buckram binding, with grey and black marbled boards. These are Publishers' File copies and are annotated in blue pencil throughout, which does in places deface the artwork accordingly. A very good set. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Over 3 kilos. Category: Booklets & Pamphlets; Collections. This book is extra heavy, and may involve extra shipping charges to some countries. Hardcover 170075 1.00

Nineteenth Century
1882 First Edition Disbound Very Good Condition Octavo (standard book size)
In 1881 the Anglo-French Submarine Railway Company began to tunnel into the Channel from both the French and English sides. With interesting new technology to handle the task of boring, and engineering expertise developed from the railways and the Suez Canal, relatively good progress was made quite swiftly. Then the political, military, and security implications of the project began to be taken seriously by parliament. Questions were raised about the risks of military invasion being facilitated by the ease of rapid transport through the tunnel and in 1882 all work was stopped by the British government, who had been unhappy with the weak assurances provided by the Submarine Railway Company. The collection of articles presented here cover a variety of issues in this debate, presenting a clear insight into the political objections as illustrated by the key signatories to the petition of leading politicians and military men, opposing views of those in support, and even the perceptions of the French. The political and security questions have a peculiarly modern tone to them, and the issues surrounding the Tunnel have been perfectly captured by these 1882 papers. To aid clarity in identifying these items they have been numbered 1 to 14 as follows; Items 1 to 11 are from The Nineteenth Century, Items 12 to 14 are from The British Association. 1. The Proposed Channel Tunnel. By Edward Plunkett (16th Baron Dunsany). 17 pages. 2. The Channel Tunnel. A Reply. By Frederick Beaumont. 8 pages. 3. The Channel Tunnel. A Rejoinder. By Edward Plunkett (16th Baron Dunsany). 20 pages. 4. The Channel Tunnel. A Civilian's View. By Goldwin Smith. 4 pages. 5. The Channel Passage. An Alternative. By John Fowler. 9 pages. 6. The Proposed Channel Tunnel. A Protest (with an introductory list of protesters against the tunnel). By James Knowles. 8 pages. 7. The Proposed Channel Tunnel. A Protest (being a further list of protesters against the tunnel). By James Knowles. 6 pages. 8. The Channel Tunnel. A National Question. By J.L.A. Simmons. 5 pages. 9. The Channel Tunnel. By W.C. Keppel (Viscount Bury). 4 pages. 10. The Channel Tunnel. By E.B. Hamley. 3 pages. 11. The Channel Tunnel. A French Reply. By Joseph Reinach. 5 pages. 12. On the Geology of the Channel Tunnel. Also present in the collection is a modern Navy Record Society monograph on the subject.

First Edition Disbound Very Good Condition Octavo (standard book size)
The period covered here is a key time for submarine boat warfare, as the technology of engines, weaponry, and tactics were developed and put into practice effectively and lethally, seen especially through the sinking of The Lusitania which was influential in bringing the United States into the war and the move from Prize Rules to Unrestricted Submarine Warfare, resulting in the German destruction of upto a quarter of Allied shipping for a period of time. These articles present the potential of submarines and such warfare in the view of writers at the time, as it was felt and experienced in those key years, with an interesting article on the attacks on The Lusitania, The Triumph and The Majestic, together with a handful of earlier material regarding the potential utility of submarines, culminating in the loss of the Submarine A1, an interesting discussion of the German-American international law dispute, and a contemporary history of submarines warfare by Commander J.G. Bower, D.S.O. who commanded a number of British submarines from around 1910 to 1917. There is also a wide ranging monograph concerning the British Submarine Service from 1900-18, which commences with an examination of the background to the Board of Admiralty's decision to commission submarines, bringing to light documents that show that senior naval officers and influential civilians in Whitehall believed that the advent of the submarine would revolutionize naval warfare in a way that would bolster the Royal Navy's position as the world's predominant naval power. Charting the technical development of British submarines, and explains issues such as why the pioneer submariners came to regard themselves as an elite group within the Royal Navy , and were allowed to become the 'silent service'. A collection such as this is becoming increasingly hard to assemble in original form, and is a very useful collection of primary source material that will allow and encourage further research. The collection consists of; 1. Robertson. The question of submarine boats. Nineteenth Century. 1900; 2. Robertson. The Admiralty and submarine boats. Nineteenth Century and After. 1901; 3. Field. Travelling Under the Sea. All About Submarine Warships. Wide World Magazine. 1901; 4. Melville. The Submarine Boat: its Value as a Weapon of Naval Warfare. Smithsonian Institution. 1901; 5. The Submarine. Quarterly Review. 1903; 6. The Loss of the Submarine A1. Monthly Review. 1904; 7. Pollen. The Submarine Myth. Dublin Review, April 1915; 8. Pollen. The Submarine Campaign - Lusitania, Triumph, Majestic. Dublin Review. 1915; 9. Jane. Submarines and Aircraft. Edinburgh Review. 1915; 10. The German-American Submarine Controversy. [The Submarine Blockade, The Lusitania Controversy, The German Pledges, Armed Merchantmen, The New Campaign, The Parting of The Ways.] The Round Table, 1916; 11. Bower. The Story of our Submarines. Parts 1 to 5. Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine, 1919; 12. Lambert. The Submarine Service, 1900-1918 (Navy Records Society Publications). Ashgate, 2001. Note; this is a collection of articles all separated and disbound from other volumes, not offprints or reprints. Overall condition is very good, with bright clean, easily readable pages. There is some browning here and there to a few pages, but not many. Each article is contained in a clear protective sleeve for safe handling. The additional book (item 12), published in 2001, is in the original publishers blue cloth, gilt lettered, and in fine, unread condition. Size: Octavo (standard book size). Item Type: Magazine. Typically studies of these topics revolve around formal parliamentary enquiry papers or Hansard type reports, and perhaps biographical memoirs. This collection though provides insights written and distributed at the time of the events in question. It represents informed public discussion of the threats and opportunities that Unions represented. This collection covers the interesting period following the repeal of the early Combinations Acts, through the development of unions with national aspirations, the influence of the union movement on the early Labour Party, and the moral and practical opposition faced by unions from some sections, including that of working men who objected to the loss of freedom sometimes forced on them (see Work and Murder, 1867 and Intimidation & Picketing, 1874). The articles reflect the conditions of the time, what was politically influential and what was limited by opposition or achieved by wider support. These articles present a much wider sense of the union movement than is available by reading standard works on the subject, which often omit or fail to follow the public debate of the time, missing out the vitally important perceptions of those who were most affected by the growth in unions and their power. One area of interest these contemporary articles give insight to is that of the intellectual dead-end, ideas that were out for debate, but for one reason or another weren't taken up. The contemporary voice they provide creates an opportunity for modern researchers, or merely the interested reader to delve further and deeper than is usually undertaken, with new and interesting insights. Interesting articles consider the Secret Organization of Trades (1859), the Despotism of the Future (1874), Direct Action (1920), the Riddle of Trade Union Funds (1926), the Trial of the Cotton Spinners, Edinburgh (1838), the Lancashire Cotton Strike (1878), Who and Where are the Unemployed (1905), the War and English Life (1915), and many others, with around 26 different writers representing a wide and varied range of political opinions and sympathies. A collection such as this would be close to impossible to reassemble, especially in these original formats, and is a very useful collection of primary source material that will allow and encourage further research into this key movement in British political, industrial and social life during the important era of the growth of industrial Britain. Note; this is a collection of 40 articles all separated and disbound from other volumes, not offprints or reprints, amounting to around 900 pages. Overall condition is very good, with bright clean, easily readable pages. There is some browning here and there to a few pages, but not many.
